Hi, will Unity share with us on the release date for Unity 2017.3? I’m so eager to try out the new features of vuforia 7 with unity.
2017.2 is going to be released by the end of this month so 2017.3 is probably going to be released in December.
It depends largely on how many bugs are found
I won’t be surprised if 2017.3 lands in 2018
5.5 - Nov 2016
5.6 - Mar 2017
2017.1 - Jul 2017
2017.2 - Oct 2017
the releases are usually 3-4 months away from each other. This would give us 2017.3 in Jan-Feb 2018 and 2018.1 in Apr-Jun 2018
Okay! Hope that the bugs are cleared soon I believe in the capability of Unity’s software engineers. I was looking at the roadmap, the one with mac was flagged out
I also believe it’s likely it will be released in 2018. However, build numbering wise this would be odd.
If their new build number system does not reflect the actual year, then they could have kept their previous Unity 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, numbering too and it would probably cause less confusion.
I hope 2017.2 is released this week?
2017.2 is out: Unity Blog
We are aiming at shipping 2017.3 before the end of the year (hence the 2017.x version)
The small delay on 2017.2 shouldn’t have had any impact on the schedule for 2017.3.
Looking at the 2017.3 Roadmap shows it’s maybe a third of “things” compared to 2017.2. Considering it isn’t that much to do than in earlier betas, a shorter beta cycle for 2017.3 probably won’t put it on risk.
2017.3 roadmap at the time of writing
They do tend to add new stuff on the roadmap as the beta progresses, though. 2017.2 started out with a pretty small list too
Missing that deadline would make calling the new versions “2017.x” a completely useless naming convention and probably reduce client confidence about the whole “we promise we are doing more releases each year” announcement that came with the new naming moniker.
Heres to hoping you guys pull it off.
And heres to hoping you one day actually make nested prefabs, new terrain and input manager.
You know, like all the other engines now have.
I think new Input manager is cancelled…
I wonder how they approach the roadmap.
I imagine they have various new features “finished” already and they just pick some of the things for the roadmap?! I don’t think what’s on the roadmap actually represents the development of the feature.
We don’t have a bunch of “finished” features ready to pick from. When teams start on something it will be in “Development” or the “Research” section and once a team says "we are confident enough to aim for X.y release they get added to that track.
I will say, the roadmap has felt a little underused for a while. Some teams (2D, particles) put almost everything there. Others, not so much. Job system, ECS system, cinemachine, post processing, new build system, all not on there.
Others are in the wrong place (Presets in development but has a feedback build. Redesigned editor assets doesn’t have a preview build. Nested prefabs is in development not research, scripts assemblies are in two places etc.)
It’s not a huge deal, but it does mean that unity roadmap is only a coarse window into unity’s future.
I don’t want to be mean but “Redesigned editor assets icons” were going to be in 5.4/5.5 and they are still in the development, Are they even in the works? @Schubkraft
They’re going to really well crafted icons I honestly have no idea where they are at right now (not involved with that team at all) but it might indeed point towards a lack us updating on things there. Will pass that on.
In general, the roadmap needs to be better managed. I have a direct RSS to it so I see every change, and its quite clear from the activity over last couple of months that there is no real QA or PR process for what goes on or off there.
You should now that if you provide a roadmap, users will hold you to it. I cant even begin to explain how furious I am every day that I refresh that page and see nested prefabs still at the bottom.
Either remove it entirely, or keep it up to date and COMMIT to things on it once you announce them.
The roadmap got updated today, at least the 2017.3 section.
More features in that category now
