It strikes me that it’s very easy for a game to get lost in the market place and that every little bit of promotion and marketing you can do the better.
One way we might be able to help each other is with User Reviews.
A few 4 or 5 star reviews might help get the ball rolling a bit.
We’re all very busy people but if we can take a bit of time to help each other I’m sure it would be mutually very beneficial.
What I propose is that we take the time to download each other’s FREE apps, have a play and write a quick review.
I’m not suggesting we lie!
If you think a game is fantastic then 5 stars is a given.
If it’s not your cup of tea but you can see all the work that’s gone into it then maybe 4 stars!
If you find it is a piece of poo or it doesn’t work on your phone then that info could be tremendously helpful to the developer too (if presented in a constructive manner).
But rather than submitting a poor review or anything less than 4 stars a private message might be the way forward.
I don’t think I’m suggesting anything underhand?
I just think we’d all be more likely to take the time to review someone’s game if we knew they were taking the time to review ours. - it’s human nature
This is definitely not the way to go… People vote what they want to vote and 4-5 stars are really top of the line. Additionally I don’t care if a product is free or not, since this doesn’t affect they way I am using it. If it sucks I don’t care if I bought it or not, I just wont use it and if its great it also doesn’t matter if it was free or not. The only thing that is different is that for free products you get a better viral marketing and people will keep their bad review more likely for themselves. And as far as I know most people in contrast to me easily vote 4-5 stars for free products but I still think this is wrong… I usually search for those apps by review stars and for now it works out great. But if everyone would use this way of “promotion” you wouldn’t be able to find anything useful in there and that would harm the whole app store…
I probably didn’t express myself clearly.
I’m not suggesting people give a game 4-5 stars if it doesn’t deserve it.
I’m trying to encourage Unity guys who have just released a game to support each other by downloading/playing and possibly reviewing each other’s work.
Without playing a game you won’t know how good or bad it is.
But time is precious.
Do I expect anyone to support my game just because I used Unity to develop it?
No.
But if someone in the same boat as me is willing to scratch my back will I return the favour?
Definitely.
There are all sorts of marketing and promotional activities we can indulge in to prevent our games disappearing into the Market void.
This is just one small idea that might help a little.
(I only mentioned Free games as I wouldn’t expect anyone to fork out dosh to review an app)
