I think this looks interesting. Is car damage gradual, or pretty much just HP that when it depletes, you explode?
Also, just a few tips to sort out some confusion on the site:
The teaser video states the game will be out in September, while the top of the page says October. I understand timeline slips better than most, but wouldn’t be a bad idea to update the video with the proper release date if you want to share it around.
The page’s title says “Doodle Race”, while the game is clearly called “Out of Brakes”. Similarly, when I click the social media sharing buttons at the bottom, some of them say “Doodle Race” as well.
Thank Schneider21, and thank you for this list of bugs ).
Yes, dates in teaser and at site are different, I just have no time to re-render and upload new video. Also I’m planning soft launch of game (first of all, for Ukraine and Russia), I would like to gather some feedback to be sure game is ready to be shipped worldwide, so this dates confusion only starts and I definitely have to update website.
Doodle Race was working name, I removed it from website, thanks )
No, car damage is not gradual. Road has obstacles of different types:
blue cubes (water barrels) is reducing your speed if you hit them (speed increases continually)
red cubes (concrete), if you hit them your car explodes
Out of Brakes has a winter theme now!
• New vehicles: Snowmobile, Bobsled, Moon Buggy, Driverless Car, Old-Timey Carriage
• New environment - New Year
• Bug fixes and performance improvements
I had totally forgotten about this game. Just downloaded and played it, and I have to say, it’s actually quite fun! My wife is currently addicted to Crossy Road (we showed up late to that party), so I’m sure when I turn her onto Out of Brakes, she’ll be an immediate fan.
The blocks flying everywhere for everything is great. It’s sort of like the fun of watching a spectacular crash in Burnout makes you not care that you suck so bad.
I’ve sunk enough hours into this now to be able to talk about it more. Firstly, I think you’ve created a compelling and addictive game! Well done! I catch myself saying “Okay, one more turn” quite a bit, which is a great quality for a game to have.
I like that there are two leaderboards: one for top speed, and one for longest distance. Gaining a top speed means avoiding the blue barriers, which makes going for longer periods of time more difficult. It’s a great way to create player-created goals that add variety to the gameplay.
I appreciate that there are no ads, and that everything can be unlocked naturally by playing enough. The option is there to buy vehicles I don’t feel like waiting for chance to unlock for me (a la Crossy Road), but I don’t feel like by not spending money I’m missing out or falling behind.
Strangely, my wife doesn’t care for the game. I haven’t gotten out of her why, yet.
All in all, though, I’ll be keeping this one on my phone for a long time. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Schneider21, thank you for your interest and feedback :).
I believe women don’t like this kind of games too much (I don’t have gender statistic for stores, but I have it from youtube game teaser: it’s 73% male and 27% female who watched video). I think this is because the game has racing nature and also is mid-core/hard-core game-play.
Currently my biggest concern is low retention. From Unity Analytics I got this results:
1 day retention 15%-25%
7 day retention 3%-5%
30 day retention 0.5%-1%
This is extremely low and I think this is because of next reasons:
Game has not enough game-play variability - currently I’m working on system of boosts that allow vehicle to hit red blocks (rams, bomb, etc.)
Game needs bigger variations of level design - cross, tunnel, narrow road, etc.
I believe this two updates could increase retention and overall Monthly Active Users will grow.
I’m happy to release Out of Brakes 1.0.4.
Main feature is boosters’ system. Collect boosters while racing: red blocks are not an obstacle anymore! Different cars have different boosters.
From the beginning of Out of Brakes development I wish to create Cars Editor, where every player will be able to create own vehicle, and then drive it. At last I can share this
