[RELEASED] Porta Inferno

After lurking around here for a while, i want to introduce myself with my first (nearly) finished project.

Did it for a friend of mine, who is writer, painter and landscape artist. With his son, a sculptor, he wants to make a snow sculpture/sound installation on a mountain in my region. As he is looking for sponsors for his project, i made this for interactive presentations and his website.

Took me about two days all in all.

Played around with some Terrain-Data from NASA-SRTM and Images form BlueMarble.
Unfortunately i could not get the terrain texture better without running into licensing issues with google-maps. Nevertheless i tried it for my own pleasure, but this will be released to public.
The snow sculpture itself is done in maya and rendered with mentalray (3 AO-passes, 1 shadow-pass). In Unity it has only the texture, no light material in the shader.

The “gameplay” isn’t that WOW. It’s intended to demonstrate how the sound installation should work.
When i gave it to a few friends for testing they wanted to walk all over the terrain because they know their local area and wanted to “climb all mountains we know at once”. So i decided to enlarge the walkable terrain and give the controller a “speed-walk”. (Terry Prattchet was right: The world is a disc. Don’t fall off the edge! )

BTW: the mountain is Grünten near Sonthofen in south Germany.

C&C welcome.

That’s really nice, man!

I hope the artist gets the go-ahead to build it - is it a remote location or are there lifts/buildings nearby to reach it?

It would just be amazing to think that on top of some random mountain somewhere there is this really cool work of art just waiting to be discovered!

The whispering is kinda eerie up there, too. I imagine if you were alone in the dark on top of a mountain and you came across that you might need a change of pants!

Nice work - it’s a fantastic way to help people to visualize the project.

Thank you,

yes i really like the project, thats why i jumped in.

The whispering is done via a sound projector, so you can’t really locate from where its coming. Its “reflecting” from the sclupture itself. The storm sound inside should really be quite loud, and whenn you pass through, this effect of silence and the wide view over the landscape …

And yes, a skiing lift is nearby, its station about 100 meters in reach and going nearly to the top.

On the other hand, it was a great experience for me, testing what can be done in unity with a limited amount of time. I mean from a game developers view this is nothing big. I’ve done vizualisation for architecture and exhibitions for quite a few years now. But the possibility to get this interactive that easy and quick is a great step forward…

There was a thread these days about architectural vizualisation. I think doing some prefabs and assets for this purpose should be doable in a reasonable amount of time, so one can simpliy drop them into the projects …

Finished!
had a lot of work the last weeks, but finally …

-updated the terrain data (higher resolution),
-shrunk down the size of the sound files and optimized some assets (20MB → 9MB),
-added the alpine hut, and a start-screen.
-updated also the html to match to the rest of the site.

will be released in the next few days on www.alpinien.de

hope you like it

can u provide info how u did tweaked the data from nasa to work out :stuck_out_tongue: any thing which can be shared openly :stuck_out_tongue:
