Because I’ve seen this question pop in various threads I think it deserves its own, has anybody ever actually seen or played a game with the Unity Personal Edition splash screen?
List so far:
Lara Croft GO (Unity 4 Splash Screen)
Thomas Was Alone (Unity 4 Splash Screen)
Laika (Unity 4 Splash Screen)
Ultraflow (Unity 4 Splash Screen)
Not much. Who pays attention to load screens? I saw it by accident the first time, just then it took me 4 goes to verify it before my post because I kept getting distracted by other stuff & kept missing it.
haha, nice
Probably not many, I’ve just been curious if any good games actually get made with the free version, logically theres no reason why they shouldn’t but it seems to be otherwise
This turned into a discussion about the splash screen before the thread even started. Estimated life time : 2 pages.
I have yet to see any games made with personal edition. I still see games with “powered by Unity” even after the last 5 game jams (global ones). From a personal standpoint, I wouldn’t care if the splash screen said “powered by dead babies”. That said, from a business standpoint, I wouldn’t want my brand associated with a term like “personal” because people are stupid and the majority of game consumers won’t be developers. They’ll make assumptions about what the label means. And those assumptions stick to your name for future developments.
It’s hard to interpret “powered by unity” incorrectly. “Personal edition” can be interpreted plenty of ways, both positive and negative.
Indeed, but when we think about it, we are getting a less professional splash screen in return for all the pro features
I for one would rather play a game with a personal edition splash screen but with pro features in (obviously if done correctly) than a powered by unity splash screen and the unity free features
That is great one. Controversial. If I saw that at the start of a game I’d expect “this will be different!” In my notebook of ideas I am collecting for when I eventually get back into taking another crack at the game market I have a note along the lines of your splash text:
Starting screen and perhaps website needs something other than the boring “powered by so-and-so”. Something unique to me to stick in gamers minds.
However as I’ve said before, the intersection of “Really popular games” and “Games from companies that make less then 100 K annually” is really, really small.
OMG, how did I forget that game, its the best!
I didn’t really mean super popular ones, rather just any people have actually played or heard of before (not from unity forums or they know the person who made it)
Yeah, the criteria is hard to meet. As soon as you have a team of more then two or three people you must have enough income to require pro or go bust as a studio. By the same token any game that gets enough organic publicity to have been heard of outside these forums will also require the dev to go pro.
My current game (a work in progress) was made originally in Unity 4.x Pro, but I’ve spent the past month converting it to Unity 5 free.*
The next update I release will carry the “Unity Personal Edition” splash screen. I’ll report back if I get any comments about that. I have a feeling no one will notice. Then again I’m making a PC game and splash screens are par for the course. I can’t speak for the mobile market.
My game is at futurelovespacemachine.com and is most definitely NSFW, so be aware before visiting. I’d link to it directly here but I don’t want to get in trouble.
For clarification, I’ve been using Pro since the beginning, but this year I’m right under the line of the financial requirement for Pro so for now I can use free.
