My friend on skype asked for a render of a his minecraft character, so i did it.while listening to the soundtracks of minecraft - First it was all modeled in Blender then uv maped and textured. Then i wanted to render it inside blender since other pros do it. But i did it inside unity3d, turned out to be really cool!
it really depends on what you are trying to do - if it’s some machinima style stuff then sure, however if you want to play with the cool stuff -real time global illumination, insanely extreemly high poly, rendering in different layers for compositing, creating, UV mapping, skinning and rendering models/characters in the same program, then you need 3ds max/maya/blender etc. The “offline shaders” - the ones that take ages to render a single frame, will always surpass the real time optimized stuff.
