Replacing SteamVR hand models

Rather than having the player pick up objects in my project, I want to have guns held by default, with the option to swap hands (think Pistol Whip or Beat Saber). Using SteamVR’s rig, I’ve gotten replacement prefabs for the hands implemented as well as the option to swap them, but I’m also getting a fair number of null reference errors which I’ve traced back to Valve’s Hand.cs script. My best guess is that the script is expecting skeleton information for a hand model, something that isn’t really applicable to a gun.

This seems like the kind of route people have taken before, does anyone have any pointers on how they approached it in the past (or links to any reference material).
