I’ve got my own pair of 3D modeled FPS hands and need to retarget an asset’s 3D modeled animated hands onto it, so essentially take the animations and make the rig do what the other hands do. I understand how to do this if it were a fully rigged humon but kinda have a hint at what needs to be done with the hands but I’m not entirely sure. My thoughts are to rename all the bones to the same names as the FPS hands rig in the asset so it recognizes the bones.
Is this possible and how would you go about doing this?
Thanks!
First, obviously, you need to do same bone names and hierarchy in modelling app.
Next, in imported model’s inspector, in tab “Rig” set animation type to “Generic” (default option), and in next line “Avatar definition” choose option “Copy from other avatar” instead of default “Create from this model”, then drop avatar from source model to object field in next line, apply. Now all animation clips will be imported with same avatar so can be used in animators on every model with this avatar. But i haven’t checked how retargeting works on skeletons with different size proportions since it is weird idea at all, so you better retarget animations somewhere else in modelling app so you can correct animation immediatly.
