I want to find out if the community would be against someone buying someones 3d asset and creating a new texture for it using the same UV coordinates and then selling just the new texture? I see alot of great models but all with very different graphic styles. By doing this someone with a specific texture style could provide more by retexturing other assets models. Customer would then be able to buy the asset with the model and an asset with the style texture they want. There are a number of great 3d models that I won’t buy because of the style of the texture. Would other 3d artists have a problem with this? Is this even a good idea?
Retexturing can be considered a derivative work - I recommend asking the author of the asset first. Some asset authors may be okay with it (and may help with cross-promotion). Others may not be okay with this.
UV mapping have a great impact on texture. Sometimes it just impossible make good texture with bad mapping. And of course it will be very hard to make same texture stile on models which have different UV mapping and different modeling approach.
Theoretically it may seems like a good idea. But personally I don’t wont someone will re-texturing my models.
I think if it will be economically sound, we will see soon cooperation between artists. Groups where someone will makes concept art, someone will model, someone will make textures, animate…
I think it’s an excellent idea. While I cannot say if authors would have a problem or not, as long as you get permission, this will make a lot of people happy.
