Ridiculous FPS

Alright look, 8.9 FPS with nothing but a 2kx2k terrain, a few meshes, and a directional light is ridiculous.

Please clarify.

I don’t think i need to honestly. Even at the LOWEST graphics settings, it’s still running at 8.9. The meshes are all low-poly. for unity to be having this issue is ridiculous. I’m on a time frame here and frankly this is pissing me off.

What platform for example. if its mobile its to be expected. On mobile the terrain is EXTREMELY heavy

Also you didn’t clarify with how many textures you painted on the terrain for example, although you redraw the terrain once again for every 4 textures (-> splatmap) you use, can lead to a lot of performance lose very fast on low end hardware.

and naturally overdoing tree - detail - gras painting without opting the settings helps a lot too going down.

but 8.9 FPS sounds a lot like mobile + not ipad2 (or not iOS at all)

When you turn on Stats, what is your Draw calls, and Verts/tris count. What Scripts are your running, if any? If custom ones, does removing them improve the situation.

It’s on a PC. 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, ATI Radeon Mobile.

Reverted to the old scene. Running above 200 FPS. I dont have a license to develop for any mobile. Hell, I don’t even have Unity Pro…

You’re on a time-frame, you didn’t pay for it, and you’re getting stressed at the volunteer help…

Look, keep your comments to yourself, please. Simple help is all I ask for. I’m in college trying to do a quick assignment, alright? In case you haven’t noticed, Pro isn’t exactly the most affordable thing in the world for a college student. Money sucks right now.

You are asking for help, by using the world ridiculous in the subject and then declining to provide more details…? But you took the time to inform us that you’re on a timeframe. If you want things done post the scene so someone can take a look. Or, you know, at least clarify.

But you fixed the problem by going to the old scene? The old scene has the same content, but runs 20 times faster?

Not even the same content, MORE content, trees, and it ran faster…oddly enough…

Unity pro costs around $99 dollars with the educational license.

Doesn’t sound rude, only says it in a definite way that you have no need for Pro then if its less important other “non survival relevant” activies that cost more per quarter if not per month :wink:

My guess would be you swapped or added a PD 3D object in the slow scene. Maybe an object with a heavy amount of animations attached.

No, no animations. I don’t know rigging and a lot of simple movement/rotate/scale animations are something I can handle from script.

What I would do…

  1. Post your projects so people can test and compare them.
  2. Try moving the slow project onto another computer and see what happens.
  3. Start the slow project from scratch importing assets one by one…run frequently to see when the slowdown happens.

I think Unity just had a hickup and needed to be restarted. And no offense to anyone, but im not exactly all for posting my projects. im sure you understand.

Not sure which University you attend, but you obviously are not in the class I teach because I do not allow my students to use the Unity forums for complete solutions, only help with unknown or misunderstood methods in Unity however they fist must demonstrate basic communication skills and have proper forum etiquette. The stats you just mentioned suggest your laptop is using shared memory and as such you probably had either McAfee or Norton scanning for Viruses at the time you were trying to run your project which will kill not only FPS but everything else.

Good luck on your school project, utilize your schools discussion threads in the class along with tutors and mentors. They are local and will do you a world of good.
