Rig "Hips" not found

I’m trying to use Blender and Mechanim to rig and animate a character. I’ve labelled my bones, although I don’t think that matters(?) one of which is called “Hips” which was the first bone I created. I am getting this error :

“MuscleClip ‘Boolie’ conversion failed: Required human bone ‘Hips’ not found UnityEditor.AssetImporterTabbedEditor:OnDestroy()”

And I can’t use Automap. When I manually assign the bones, I get to the legs and it tells me:

"Transform Upperleg.L is not a child of Hips transform “Hips”

The legs were created by extruding out from the Hips.

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong. Maybe I am setting up my rig wrong in Blender?

–edit-- I have managed to sort the ‘child’ problem out. I just extended from the spine as opposed to the hips(root), and disconnected.
