Rigging for animation in Maya, and NO referencing for unity?

Hi all,

I am having a tricky problem. Usually the way I work in Maya is to rig and skin my character in a master file, and reference this file into new scenes where I animate run, sprint, jump, etc cycles.

In Maya referencing allows me to go back and change the rig i.e. add a backpack with straps, and a bone rig, and then the new stuff would update to my other files.

I’m having a problem in that if I need to add the bag, I have to go back to each file and re-do the rig exactly, or fix it in one file and copy and paste all of my keys into the new file. Unity doesn’t recognize referenced files from Maya.

Can anybody give advice on how I should go about this or am I just stuck? I feel like it is an inefficient way to work

Thanks!

I work that way too. Are you allowing Unity to do the convert to FBX work for you, or are you exporting the FBX manually from Maya?

When you do it manually, you can manage the referencing a little better. There’s the extra step of exporting from Maya - but I find I get what I want in Unity better that way.
