Root motion or not?

So I was wondering a few things about root motion from anybody who has had personal experience with it.

-What are to positives and negatives of using root motion?
-Which types of games are most positively influenced by root motion?
-Does root motion look more accurate in the end in terms of foot placement (specifically with mocap animations)?
-Will scripting movement instead give better control and a better feel for the player?

I wanted to know as much as possible on root motion before I started a project. I will be using it for a third person game that will have a combo system, has anyone set this type of game up with root motion?

Thanks!

I use both. Root motion is ideal if you want a lot of realism or need to precisely dictate the character’s current pose for a position in world space: ladders, specific attacks etc.

It’s not actually essential, but you will find if you use motion capture, root motion is not far behind. AAA rely on it because they can generate endless motion capture. You might not be able to. Having said that, root motion places a lot more of the gameplay feel under artist control not programmer control, so that’s the trade off that might or might not be desirable.

In short, it’s just another tool you choose to wisely use or not use, depending.

Just try it out and decide. You will need to rework code for it as the movement takes place from the animation.

Ok, appreciate the info. I think I was overthinking it, I will give it a shot.
