runtime sprite swapping in animation possible with 4.3 2d?

I’ve got some animations in which I’d like to vary the base sprites being animated, swapping out multiple versions, different weapons, clothers, etc. Is this possible using the animator? Any ideas would rock!

Yes, since sprites can be directly assigned to an animation clip, you can use animations made up of other sprites in your Mecanim network. So just create the animations for your other bases, and set up your conditions for when those should be used in Mecanim.
