S24 Ultra has 20% worse performance then Note 20 Ultra

I got new Samsung phone and still kept the old one for benchmark purposes. After installing my game on both of them, I noticed that my Note20 is 25% faster then S24 Ultra.

  1. I set the same DPI on both of them which removes impact of S24U higher resolution
  2. There are no any third party game boost apps in effect on any of the phones
  3. Script execution and render loop on main thread all take longer on S24U
  4. Tried with sustained performance on and off, same effect

Any ideas why that might be? I did geekbench 6 and Atutu benchmarks on both phones and S24 Ultra is at least 2x faster.

Android is generally a terrible OS for gaming performance. There was a once an experiment where they installed Windows 10 ARM on a mid range Android phone, and it could run AAA game like Crysis 3 while also running a full desktop OS. So it’s not the hardware, but the terrible Android software that’s draining all the performance from mobile hardware.

Is it possibly thermal throttling?

I figured that out! The reason for that huge performance degrade is… phone case. I have thick case on my S24 ultra and no case on Note 20, after removing the case I get the same performance initially and higher after 10 minutes, still no huge difference but at least its better now. It’s crazy how phone case can affect performance!

Rubber and plastic are excellent insulators. We typically use aluminum and copper for heat transfer since they have a thermal conductivity rating of 237 W/m•K (watt per meter-kelvin) and 398 respectively. Rubber and plastic are a 0.2 with some variance depending on the type. So almost 2,000 times worse. It’s like wrapping it in a blanket.
