Hi guys,
We’re a 12-strong dev team by the name of Opposable Games working on Salvaged, a dual screen tactical sci-fi action game. Salvaged is currently in pre-alpha phase, so there’s still a lot to be done but I guess that’s kinda the point of this forum!
Salvaged puts you inside the control room of a Remote Interstellar Salvage Crew (RISC) commander as your squad board wrecked ships in search of loot and, primarily, black boxes. The universe is merciless and the lives of these company soldiers are of little value to the corporation you and your team answer to.
Much of our influence comes from the scene in Aliens where Ripley and Gorman are watching the monitors of their crew while aliens are stalking the team and tearing them apart. This one:
To issue commands to the squad players interface with a tactical screen/minimap on their tablet or smartphone. We currently support iOS and Android but we’re looking to go to Windows 8 providing we have the time and resources. The larger screen, connected to the host machine, displays the headcams of each of the player’s squad.
The dual screen nature of our game is probably best explained with imagery; here’s the original piece of concept art that really sets the mood for the game:
And here’s some video footage of the game being played on an iPad and Windows PC:
The ships your squads will be visiting are procedurally-generated on each play, as are the squad’s stats. Team members will suffer permadeath so it’s up to you to keep them alive (not easy).
We’ve recently announced support for single screen computers and the Oculus Rift. We were scratching our heads for a long time as to how we’d do this without losing the distinctive feeling of being trapped in a control room. Our solution was to create a virtual control room (see below).
We’ll also be supporting dual monitor setups, where the tactical screen will be displayed on one monitor, with the video feeds on the other.
I’ve included a collection of smaller images below but we’ve a lot more over on our Kickstarter page, which also has a ton more information about how the game will be played.
If you’ve got any questions on the game do let me know, I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread and can pester the team for the relevant answers.
Cheers,
Dan
