A few quick questions since I’m thinking of buying this tablet today:
Does it work okay with Unity performance-wise, and can it be used for testing general android tablet compatibility?
If I buy the Wi-Fi + 3G version (the only one available here), can I just use the Wi-Fi and not have to get a sim-card for it?
Do you find the sketching abilities with the pressure sensitive pen + Sketchbook Pro good enough for roughing out sketches for game art (and then of course polish them on a “real” computer)?
Thank’s in advance, and sorry if I should have posted this elsewhere.
With the Ipad mini out I don’t see any reason to buy an android tablet . Android will never work as well as IOS, it may be cheaper in the short run, but consider IDevices are problem free I consider them to be a better investment( and the resell value is constant )
That is one thing I love about apple products, how well you can resell them. I bought my iPhone 4 second hand for 160, and then sold it a year later for 165! haha
I think he wanted a tablet… not a paperweight/rubbishdumpfill.(Just kidding :p)
But seriously… my galaxy s2 has nearly not dropped in value sense I purchased it brand new last year, so don’t talk to me about resale value, I could upgrade my phone to a better one and gain $100 due to advances in technology.
The note 10.1 is good… but I would wait invest a bit more and wait to get the MS surface pro.
(Also note that the Ipad is not a replacement for a Note 10.1, the Note is not the same kind of tablet)
I’m not going to get involved in a fanboy argument because i recognise the strength in most of these devices, but the ipad is a closed system, in one iteration of device releases, there will be one idevice, and a billion and one androids (and others) made, so the comparison is illogical and misleading, especially as time goes by
Not necessarily games, but most likely… and TBH both have nearly the exact same amount of decent games, or on ether platform there is a near exact replica game… so really it comes down to which one you prefer and in this case the OP clearly wants the android and there is 0 reason not to.
I suppose if you care about games you may well have a point, i just dont use my phone (or anything that isnt on a big screen) for games (except making them)
On the subject of making games, to develop for iOs if you only have a windows pc suddenly starts getting very costly, when i think their intention is to develop for android
I look at it from the perspective of an enduser . IOS devices just work . Android devices are great too , since you can do hacker things( custom roms , ect) .
Then again we don’t know what the OP is using his tablet for .
Anyhow i went and did the sensible thing and googled
The reviews are fair, and seem to imply it is a good device, regarding your question about how well it will run with unity, it seems to share similar innards to the samsung galaxy s3, so you probably wont find many more powerful android devices for use with unity
My fiancee has an s3 and it blows my mind when i fiddle with unity on it, so yeah it should be good for that,at least performance wise
For the benefit of the OP, and as you seem convinced that they should rethink, could you substantiate that comment so they can make an informed decision
In my experience with Android , things just don’t work 100% . Android, not in terms of power, but in terms of the end user experience , is barely catching to the Ipad at launch . When you download an app from the IOS store you know it will work , with Android it may or may not .
The OP would be better served buying a Wacom tablet , for the Galaxy note, good pressure sensitive drawing software may never materialize.
Luckly he has 30 days or so to return it . So my advice would be this , day one see if you can find good drawing software that fully takes advantage of the touch sensitive pen . If he can’t find it , take it back .
The IOS app store has proven far more profitable, theirfore the apps for it are WAY more advance then what you can get on Android .
Notice in my sigh theirs a crudely made android game , I’ve gotten emails from folks whining that they can’t play my games( none of which are all that good), since their phones are so slow . The problem is that instead of developers being able to target the high end( even an Iphone 4 is going to be VERY decent for gaming), they tend to target the low end to get the max number of consumers .
Of course you have exceptions , but I see a far higher standard of quality on the IOS. Google doesn’t even care what you upload to their market .
Wow, left the computer for a while and was stonished at the number of replies when I returned…
I thank you all for your comments, all information is welcome!
However, I don’t want this to become an IOS vs Android thread.
I have nothing against Ipads or Iphones, I’ve used them and I like them. I have a Mac Mini with a Wacom tablet that I use for development.
The only reason(s) for me for getting an android tablet instead of an Ipad is because I have a basic android license for Unity and I’m comfortable with deploying and publishing to android devices. And, I like the idea of using the pressure sensitive pen for sketches when I’m not at the computer.
IF I some time in the future manage to develop a game that I believe in, then I will get the IOS license and a physical device to test on since I know there’s more money to be made in that market.
