Hey everyone,
Iv had the idea for a game for a long while, and only recently did I discover Unity. I believe that its the perfect platform for my project. I, however need some guidance to know what can and can’t be done and where I should head from here.
The game I want to develop is a top-down survival village management game. I draw my inspiration from a recent wave of games in the genre like Prison Architect, Gnomoria, RimWorld and Towns. So here come the questions:
First of all is it possible to code such a game in Unity 4 ?
Does anybody have suggestions for books or online tutorial series for that genre ?
One thing that I have noticed is that most of these games have randomly generated maps. But they are always of limited size. Would it be feasible to create such a game but in a endless and fully procedurally generated map (minecraft style) ?
That’s pretty much it. Thanks for any input at all.
There are many pre-existing games of that nature, some in various stages of development. I used to try to avoid touching anything similar to my ideas in case of contamination - but I have since realized that learning from other peoples mistakes is a great habit to get into. Play some of them, try something like Stonehearth - it’s very crude and barely a game yet has had a fair amount of time put into it, but like most ‘indie games’ it’s just dragging it’s feet and not going anywhere fast; and let’s face it once all small game developers get financed by the gaming community they realize there’s no rush to market and take the ‘paid by the hour’ approach which causes significant dissatisfaction amongst fans. That right there is a take away lesson to learn from Stonehearth.
I would be interested in seeing what you’ve come up with in the past two years. Admittedly 99.999% of all comments about ‘I want to make a game.’ lead to zilch content. You’ll find that most people who make good games got into it by making stuff, not games. Fluffing with code. Tweaking. Modding. Making boring broken little bits and pieces. And that people who have great ideas for games tend to never learn to make said games and just go around talking about them all the time. I was in the latter category, so now I’m trying to push myself into the former category. As a hobbyist of course.
If you would like to touch base, I am @bashpr0mpt on Twitter, @ message me (my DM box is perma-full and unusable - when you see my following on there you’ll understand why :C) and let me know where you’ve gotten. At worst we can natter about ideas, at best you may have made some progress and perhaps we can help each other along or at least motivate one another to not squander our ideas.
