Saving an object?

Hello. How would I make the equivalent of a prefab, from inside the game(as in, when the player is using the published build)? I want to make an RPG, and I am going to have several objects (like party members) that will be changed during the course of the game to unique variables, etc. How can I save an entire object during the game?
