I’m trying to build a workflow to go from Maya to unity and I’m running into an issue with scale. I build in Maya in real world size. When I save the scene and enter Unity the items are huge. It makes no difference what my scene preferences are set to. I have tried Meters, Centimeters, Feet, Inches, and even Kilometers. I have adjusted the scale factor in my export settings and nothing has changed. The only thing that works is for me to group the scene and scale the objects down manually to .01 the size of the original group. This is not even correct I still have to manually adjust till its something like .01453 or some random number like this. So it’s not an exact scale facto is what I’m saying. Does anyone have a workflow for this?
I’m having a difficult time believing that nobody is having scale issues going from maya to unity. Can some please shed some light on this issue?
This question has come several times in the last week or so for both Max and Maya. Do a search for the issue. For example here’s one:
Well I better understand how to apply import settings in unity now however the scale factor is not correct or the standard asset first person controller is not correct. The closest size that I can get to with the export options is setting it to .01. This gets the object close but not correct. I created a table in maya that was perfect size for a human character when I bring it in to Unity at a scale factor of .01 its close but needs to be manually scaled up to be in correct proportion to the first person controller.
You say it’s close. How close? How much does the table need to be scaled? If you’re just tweaking it ever so slightly then this is an issue of what constitutes the “perfect size for a human character”. The First Person Controller is exactly 2 meters tall so if you put a 2 meter tall cube in Maya you can compare.
I went back and played with my scale character, the table, and the first person controller and this is what I have found. It seems to me that the camera is placed a little high on the first person controller. I scaled this table up based on the first person controller and how it looked through its eyes. I then brought in my character and looked through his eyes and saw a huge difference. The table is scaled much to large now based on the scale character. I have placed a few screenshots to illitrate the difference. The character is a 6 foot tall man. The firt person controller is a two meter tall. The difference between the eye levels is quite a bit. The scale is correct going from maya to unity at a .01 its just the first person controller camera hieght that makes things look to small.
Well, ok, but that’s just a matter of adjusting the camera’s height and/or the cupsule’s scale. What if you were making a casino table for midgets? Would the First Person Controller work out of the box? No, of course not… you have to adjust it for your specific needs.
This is very true but it was a point of confusion for scale none the less.
