Here we go:
Thanks for posting this!
He said it should be released in about a month, so we can expect this around the middle of April.
No info on what their pricing scheme is going to be (unless I missed it in the video). I assumed they were going to ink a deal with Unity Technologies to release it as a feature for Pro users, but I get the feeling that negotiations broke down and Scaleform for Unity is instead going to be released as a third party extension which means $$$.
Still gotta see what 4.0 GUI will offer.
4.0 GUI what about the 3.5 ehm 3.6 GUI! ![]()
Windows and IOs only, no Mac?
While admittedly I was looking forward to Scaleform within Unity once I learned of it, I’m however not too pleased with this implementation.
If lends itself to a bolted on feel, not a true integration. The fact that you immediately lose the browser target is a good example.
We all know how Apple feels about Flash so the fact that this is basically using Flash files, not to mention you’ll most likely need Flash to generate your GUIs as well. I hear mentioned of 'Flash Studio" - is that Flash CS4? Cause that’s the last Flash that I’ll most likely have since I don’t really fancy give Adobe too much more of my money moving forward with the new pricing structure coming online and all.
So if this doesn’t work Flash Pro CS4 then I’d be out of luck anyway. I would imagine it does however.
I love the demo’ed GUI - exactly the kinda stuff I’m looking to do - frankly all you need to do is Play Mass Effect 3 and you can see that kinds of GUI work I’d like to do within Unity - I’d just prefer it to be native and not something bolted on - quite loosely, frankly…

The lack of web support is sad but I would take issue with the lack of “true” integration comment. If you’ve worked with scaleform in any other commerical engine then I don’t think you would feel this way. At least they went and ahead and did the integration for us. It used to be that integrating 3rd party middleware like speed tree or scaleform was the studio’s job. These days many engines do the integration for you, however, the approach scaleform is using is no different than the approach one would take with any other commerical engine where integration was required.
Having worked with scaleform in the past, any possible break in the way one might be used to working with Unity will be well worth it. The quality and professional AAA look that a scaleform UI can produce is either very difficult or impossible with what Unity currently provides.
I’m actually really looking forward to this ![]()
