Script compilation issues upon upgrading to 2018.3.0b2

Hey,

Upon upgrading to the latest beta, no scripts in the project compile.

I get several of these errors:

I have tried nuking the library and all that, but can't seem to solve the issue.

EDIT: I deleted the collab history folder that the editor log is complaining about on the top there (I've used collab like twice, the last time was in March or something), which makes those complaints go away, but the compiler errors when opening the project are still the same.

This looks like an issue with the com.unity.incrementalcompiler package to me, try removing it and see if the issue persists.

Thanks, I got it to work. It wasn't just the incremental compiler package. The entities package and package manager ui package also had issues.

I opened a fresh project in the beta, enabled experimental packages, installed those components, and copied over the versions from that. This means updating from:

This does show two problems:
- I can't update packages from the package manager window if there are compilation errors. When the way to fix those compilation errors is to update packages, I'm in a bind. I can fix it by editing the manifest.json file, sure, but that's a major pain point, and might be way outside the comfort zone for non-programmers
- As best you can, if a Unity update requires a package update, that should be automatic.

We are working on allowing to update packages while there are compile errors in the project, but this requires some changes to how we handling script compilation and reloading of assemblies. This change is planned for Unity 2019.1.

As for updating the packages automatically, I will ask our package manager team to respond to this.

I also noticed that you are using the staging package registry and preview packages. Might be the case that this issue does not arise with the default registry and default packages.

Sadly, you are dealing with experimental or preview packages on the staging registry. There is a log going against you :P

First, the staging registry was not supposed to be shared with or used by non-Unity developers. Sadly, we did not have the mean to make it private and we decided to go ahead and make it public at the risk of having situations (or confusion) like this one. This registry is a queue for Unity Packages to be approved and officially released. So you may find packages there that just don't work! Some teams decided to share projects using this registry. This was not a good idea! At some point in the near future, this registry will be turned off and replaced by a private one.

Preview and experimental packages are like alphas and betas. They can have issues.

About your request for updating packages automatically. We have a system in place that will make sure any verified packages are updated to the compatible version when you upgrade to a newer Unity version. This is our pledge for now. This system will become more open in the future to also automatically update preview packages.

I think the reason that I was on the staging registry was due to the instructions for the early versions of the job/entities previews specifically asked to use that registry. Thanks for letting me know that's a bad idea!

Because of the large amount of people trying out the entities system when it shipped, there's probably a lot of other users that will run into the same issue - like OP. You might consider automatically changing the manifest of anyone targeting the staging registry.

We are not using the staging registry at all. I have rolled back from this beta, but will check out your suggestions of changing to different packages, at some point. Thanks for that :slight_smile:

Hi all !

In the same vein, trying to embed as few modules as I can (donno if that's really a great idea) I noticed that disabling either Video module or UnityWeb Request module while having Cinemachine and Director modules installed outputs those messages to the console :

You must add a reference to assembly 'UnityEngine.DirectorModule, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'.

I believe Director module depends on the one I removed, but the error message is quite misleading ! :p

tl;dr: Yes, these error messages are not really helpful, we are aware, and working on it.

Longer explanation:

We are parsing error messages from the compiler to detect errors resulting from using types in missing modules. These should result in a CS1069 "Type forwarded to a dll which is not referenced" compiler errors, which we can process and append with information on how to fix it. In this case, the error message would be appended with a hint to enable the UnityWeb Request module, as it is required by the Director module.

This used to work correctly, but then we also upgraded the default scripting runtime to .NET 4.6, which also switches the compiler from Xamarin's mcs to Microsofts Roslyn compiler. Unfortunately, Roslyn has a bug where it will generate an incorrect compiler error in this case (instead of CS1069 you get a generic CS0246 "Type not found" error, which does not have the information we need to add a hint to help you).

Switching to the old .NET 3.5 runtime will give you more helpful errors in this case.

We are currently talking to Microsoft to figure out how this bug in Roslyn can be fixed. You can follow the discussion on the bug report here: https://github.com/dotnet/roslyn/issues/29747

...aaannd, not having Wind module while having ParticleSystem one prevents me to use the ParticleSystem class, with error :

The Particle System uses the wind module in the external forces module so disabling it will also disable particles .We will investigate if we can just disable the external forces part.

So, even if you don't want to use the old scripting runtime, you may want to temporarily switch to .NET 3.5 to get better errors to help you debug such issues.

I just upgraded from an earlier 2018 version of Unity, and was forced to enable Wind. That, unfortunately seems to have made the balloons that may main char holds unstable and frenetic. I don’t have any wind zones but it seems just including the Wind Module disturbs the behavior of my balloons which are based on hinges and spring joints. How can I turn off all Wind effect on the system - I have no WindZones, but seem to have wind.

That sounds like a bug. Please file a bug report with an example project so we can figure out what’s going on.

Is there any possibility of an interim solution for this problem? An upgrade from b6 to b7 completely broke a package that took me hours to figure out how to fix. There’s currently no way to upgrade a package when it doesn’t compile without hunting down the package and manually setting version numbers.
