Sculptris Alpha 6 released, now for Max OSX

Didn’t see a post for this so I thought I’d give a heads up…

Most excellent.

I wonder, they recruited the creator of sculptris and now pixologic works on 2 sculpting tools. what’s the point

There are many points why they did it. Sculptris is one big promotion for Zbrush so it helps bosting Zbrush sales from those who are moving rom Sculptris to Zbrush or any other transition. You have to keep in mind that you cant acces sculptris without getting to Zbrush website/ forum which is great promotion for them. Also another thing would be to lose potential competition. While sculptris is free it is still competition for Zbrush becouse there are some people who are using sculptris becouse they cant afford Zbrush at its price. Now with purchasing it they are marketing Zbrush a lot.

Pixologic will still be figuring out what to do with Sculptris. It’s a great program for introducing “normal” people to 3D modeling/sculpting. But on its own it’s useless for producing actual usable models. So at the moment the Sculptris users seem to be a small community who are happy to post pics of their work on the ZBrush forums.

What Pixologic does with Scrulptris in future will depend on whether people actually use it or not.

I suspect it will always be a program aimed at novices and Pixologic will be keen not to add anything too technical to it. The new GoZ button will be the answer to those users that need more advanced features in order to produce game friendly models etc.

Without comparing it to zBrush, why is Sculptris on its own useless?

This is the best “sculpt” app I have used in my life. Love it.

Agreed, probably one of my favorite programs ever. You can have hours of fun without even reading any docs or watching any tutorials at all, and actually come up with some cool stuff; probably the most intuitive 3d app ever.

Sculptris is not useless, defenetly not. It has sculpting tools and polypainting which is different than mudbox or zbrush but you can defenetly put some decent models from it. If sculptris is useless, then you could say the same for blender, silo, wings and rest of free “crap”.

Oh dear, it’s like that game chinese whispers!

I didn’t say Sculptris was useless.

I said that on its own it was useless for creating usable models. Meaning you can’t really expect to create a model within Sculptris that is suitable for a game engine. Sculptris models are far too high poly. You could use Sculptris’ reduction brush but that’s still not going to give you an optimal model. The only way to optimize your models is to either use ZBrush’s decimation tool (best in the business, but still far from prefect) or a retopology tool.

Well yes that is true, but you cant either do that with Mudbox and noone would call it useless in any way. And neither Zbrush retopo tools are perfect and a lot of people is using external tools for retopology, which means that even Zbrush isnt yet whole package.

I would say Mudbox on its own is useless for creating game ready models.

Mudbox is useless in many ways. It’s useless at ironing my shirts and it’s also useless at taking my dog for a walk.

Mudbox and Sculptris are both useful for doing what they do. Mudbox is great for detailing, and Sculptris is great for sculpting.

You could create a game ready model using ZBrush alone. So yes, ZBrush is a whole package.
