search (again): esc doesn't close it if search isn't click focused

ESC should close it, like the old days, add a pin icon for those who like to keep it
it’s for search all

You always have the option to open a transient window instead. “Main Menu/Window/Search/Transient Window”. You can assign a shortcut to it and replace the default global Search shortcut.
