i’m searching a medium or bad sound fx creator software. It should be freeware free for commerical use.
The reason i’m not searching for a ‘good’ software is because i’m not able to understand really good sound software
I already found one very nice piece which would be exactly what i’m searching for:
it’s called sfxr (DrPetter's homepage - sfxr).
Only problem here is that it creates only 16 bit sounds, and thus, is only good for absolutely retro games.
A BIT more complex would be nice.
What do you use for making your game fx ?
I want to avoid the need to record sounds with my headphone if possible.
I often pull stuff from http://sounds.beachware.com/, and tweak them in Garage Band. The site has 5000 sounds, some of which are terrific, and some of which sound like they were recorded off the speaker on an old TV.
And if you’ve got Garage Band, they have a bunch of great sound FX too. For example, there’s a volcano that I’ve used for explosions – just take a 1/2 second of it and fade it out real fast. Sounds like a gunshot.
are you sure it is legal what you are doing there?
Hm, i don’t know if you are planning to create commercial games, but if, then i don’t know how the legal state is …
if i take a sound effect someone else made,
and modify it … is it MY or still HIS sound effect after all ?
I would prefer to go the ‘safe’ way, and create the sounds by myself as far as i can, and thus i would need a software which truly generates them
(or has some inbuilt tweakable effects which are there for exactly that reason)
You have to check the licensing for any free sound you download from the internet. The most used one I’ve seen is the Creative Commons license.
If you want to create your own sounds, then simply take a recording device out and record them yourself. Try throwing a rock at the inside of a support for a high tension power line. You’ll immediatly recognize where Star Wars got their blaster sound effect from.
Take the source sound and tweak it through an app like Audacity or other sound editing package.

SFXR is about the only freeware tool I know of that creates sound effects with such a simple interface.
What most people do is license sounds from on-line libraries that have been created by professional sound designers. There are also a few free sites. You should investigate the EULA for each of these work a bit differently.
