I am looking or other platform besides Steam to sell desktop games. I did a google search but most items came up were over a couple of years old. What is the current roster? Some that were active aren’t and there are new ones I probably never heard about.
For example your own website. Promote it and sell your games.
Off the top of my head I know of GOG, Humble Store, Humble Widget, and Itch.io. GOG has a review process and is picky about who they accept if that’s why you’re looking for an alternative to Steam. I’m inclined to believe Humble Store is the same but I have little to no info on them. Humble Widget is for selling software on a custom website but they handle the transaction. Itch.io is very loose with who they accept and is mostly free programs with some paid.

There’s also the Epic Game Store, but AFAIK you can’t just sign up and publish your game. You need to contact Epic and they approve games case by case.
I knew I was missing something very obvious. ![]()
I suggest you edit your previous post and add the link.
Unless Steam stops me from going on other platforms I see no reason why I wouldn’t put it on Steam and as well confident it will pass any muster placed on it for allowing sales from other sites. Thanks for the links.
Steam community can be a bit crazy. Aside from that, no real reason to skip it.
Yep. My intention was that you would choose it because of that rather than be held back by it.
We will promise all trolls that we will forward their complaints to our Anal Retention Review Committee so they can recommend appropriate actions to take and get back to them ASAP.
I am just looking to maximize the profit on the work of my son and I. I don’t care if it is 20 bucks a month. That is 20 bucks more than I would have had otherwise. I appreciate your comments. Thanks.
We’re on the Windows Store, if you’re looking for a 20 bucks a month platform.
… It’s not actually that bad, but it’s not the first one I’d put effort into with the returns we’ve been seeing.
In a similar vein, there’s also the Mac App Store, but dealing with the Apple distribution machinery is such a pain in the ass, and it’s probably not going to make you very much either.
Mac App Store sales are genuinely abysmal. They’re so bad that it’s actually surprising that Apple is still trying to push that paradigm on their computers in the first place. I’ve seen better Mac sale stats off itch.io Mac purchases and downloads than I have off the Mac App Store.
Interesting and thanks. I am in boycott mode against free speech destroyers so the Apple Store is enemy territory. I never though 2 decades back I would say such.
Doesn’t Windows Store require UWP apps?
I think they dropped that requirement. We shipped using some kind of “bridge” software that essentially wrapped a normal program in a UWP app. I didn’t do that code work, but my impression is that it’s fairly easy.
Here’s a link to what seems to be the latest version.
I am not sure if they still operate the same way, but greenman gaming was okay for selling on at one point or another - maybe worth checking it out:
