I have a semi truck and trailer. The truck moves and turns excellently. I put a character hinge between the truck and trailer and it works (all the other hinges failed). When I take a right turn in my truck, the trailer pivots but doesn’t follow the truck. It doesn’t line up behind it after the truck completes the turn. The trailer slides to the side. Almost like you see in a movie when a truck is perpendicular to it’s trailer and the truck is skidding forward, and the trailer is skidding sideways. One interesting thing to note about the trailer is that it always faces the same direction it spawned in.
The view for the end user is going to be overhead, so I don’t have to make things very pretty. They just have to work!
Any ideas? Thanks!
Hmmm, I wonder why that is? What do you mean by “failed?” Did you set values in the Inspector correctly? I’ll have a look later myself if someone else doesn’t jump in and help out before I get home.
By failed, I meant that they make the trailer act really weird. The trailer sorta floats away, and then comes back.
It’s that portal to Hell that was opened by your joint damning.

Everyone else, don’t even try to guess. You’ll hurt yourselves.

Did you manage to get this problem sorted rogersc?
I am running into the same problem, tried every kind of joint to no avail.
Joints certainly do take a little mastery, but they are well worth the effort… character joints for this kind of thing really don’t seem like the way to go. I’d certainly suggest taking the time to master configurable joints
I see no reason why a hinge joint wouldn’t work for this. I assume your trailer and truck are separate game objects and that you have verified that you are connecting a rigidbody for each with the joint? Is that the case? Technically speaking you would need to use two hinge joints to allow the trailer and tractor to hinge on two axes, so you can go up and down inclines.
Getting the correct effect for the tractor and trailer, though is going to require more than correct use of a joint. In addition to having both modeled with a rigidbody, correct mass, under the effect of gravity, etc., youare going to need to have wheel colliders appropriately set up on both the tractor and trailer. For example when the truck turns, the trailer will follow a path in that direction, as opposed to just sliding to the right, because the wheels generally only allow movement only in a forward and backward direction. The wheels do laterally slip under a turn and this effect can be achieved with wheel colliders. You don’t necessarily have to use one per visual wheel depending on how realistic you want the truck to behave.
Can you explain how you are using wheel colliders?
I am having the same problem…I got it working then broke it and cant remember how i got it working.
At the moment my wheel colliders dont line up and down otherwise it would all work.
It’s been a while since 2009. I would start a new topic with specific information about what is happening in your project and screenshots if you think it would help others to understand your problem. And don’t forget to mention the editor version.
