seperate license for Mac PC?

this may be a stupid question:

will I have to buy another license to use this on PC and another seperate license for MAC?

I am planning to buy a license for unity pro
with iPhone basic

I use MAX so I’d like to work on Windows for some things and on Mac for others - will this require 2 licenses?

thanks,
Haru

No. You are allowed 2 installs on any machine, Mac or Windows.

wow,so at any price, I am not allowed two installs on any machine mac or windows?
that is a very unusual licence model, I would encourage Unity to sell more than one licence to an individual so they may use it in the way i described.

OK, I guess I will not be purchasing a license after all, I will investigate other game engines options
Shiva looks interesting, they have for one license fee a windows dev enviroment and a iPhone tool that runs on Mac, it’s not as nice as Unity but i suppose it will have to do for now

until such a time as Unity allows you to buy multiple licences

thanks!

You should re-read jeffcraighead’s response.

You ARE allowed to install Unity3D on two different machines with a single purchase, and it DOES NOT MATTER if they are Mac or PC installations.

So you CAN install it the way that you want on both your PC and your Mac.

ah ok understood,
so it’s possible to buy a pro license for my PC
and an indy licence + iphone for my Mac?

ah, i guess not:
“A company, incorporated entity, or individual may not license both Unity Pro and Unity Indie at the same time. So a team can’t mix those two licenses.”

I’m sure I’m not the only person in this situation
so, for your consideration:
a third option like “Iphone kit” for 600$ where you get the limited version of the Unity editor and the iphone publishing that can be licenced concurrent with an Unity Pro on Windows would be ideal for people like me. - just a suggestion

now that you are multi-platform it would be nice to offer some sort of combo deal,
I ,like everyone else on the planet, am excited about exploiting the iPhone platform so
I really only want the Mac version of Unity to experiment with iPhone apps

I use 3d studio Max and I am primarily a
Windows user and most of my software investment is in Windows software, I bought a MacBook just to experiment with iPhone apps.

so, i must go and ponder what to do…

You don’t need to

You can activate the Pro license on your Windows system as well as the mac system (2 systems per license)
Additionally you can buy an iphone basic license and install that on your mac as well

oh really! I can!
wow! that would be ideal!

have you or anyone else here done that? I’m getting some mixed signals, slightly confused :frowning:

sorry for such stupid questions, I am an indivual hobbyist so this would be a significant investment for me

Yeah me ^^

I own Unity Pro + iPhone Advanced + Asset Server

Unity Pro + Asset server installed and activated on Windows Desktop

Unity Pro + iPhone Advanced + Asset Server installed and activated on my mac book pro

same is possible with iphone basic instead of advanced and without owning the asset server

Unity and Unity iPhone are two separate products. So you get two installs for Unity, to use however you want (as long as only you are using them). Then you get two installs for Unity iPhone, although in this case both have to be on Macs since there is no Windows version.

sure on that eric?

as you do not get 2 distinct license keys. Its a single license key

Unity licensing:

  • One seat:
Only one person can use the licensed project at a time. So even though you install it on two computers, only one person may use an install.

  • Two installs:
Activating unity on any computer, windows or mac, will set that computer as one of your two installs allowed per license. Reinstalling unity and the operating system will mean that you have to re-activate unity, but as long as the general configuration (operating system version etc.) remains the same, unity will pick up the existing registration and roll with that.

Notice that since the operating system version is part of what distinguishes individual computers, dual booting OS X and windows or perhaps multiple windows versions will count as one new computer per system.

So the possible install configurations are as follows:

  • OS X, OS X
  • OS X, Windows
  • Windows, Windows

Assuming “Windows” denotes the same version of Windows. As mentioned, different versions count as different machines.

No, my license key for Unity iPhone is quite different from my normal Unity license key.

–Eric

Well you get a new license key after you buy the iphone license ubt that one actually includes your regular unity license.
I assumed that the old license key would no longer work.

After all you can not license unity iphone. You can only license Unity + iphone addon

Thanks so much for all of your help to clarify these issues and help me make the case for Unity.
We have purchased 5 licenses for unity pro, and 1 coming for iPhone!

Happy to become part of the community of Unity users!
