Serious issue - VS2017 Tools for Unity stops working! Have to reinstall ENTIRE VS2017 standalone!

This is the 2nd time this has happened. This never happened in 5.5 + VS2015, only in 5.6 + VS2017.

What happens is nothing relating to Unity is detected anymore and all intellisense or coloring related to Unity - including error detection - everything relating to Unity just poofs away. For example, you can see the [SerializeField] isn’t colored anymore - it’s no longer detected.

This just randomly happens – it was working fine an hour ago, but not now after no real changes.

We’re using Unity services + Unity 5.6f3 + VS2017 Community.

  • I tried reinstalling Unity
  • I tried reinstalling ONLY the Tools for Unity
  • I tried opening C# project from within Unity instead of from VS2017
  • I tried “Open C# project” from within Unity
  • I tried reinstalling VS2017 from Unity’s download asst
(off-topic: which never completes installation, reproduced on all machines - a different issue I reported a while back - since VS2017. 2015 was fine. I have a feeling this wasn’t tested well, like many things in 5.6 “final”…)
  • I tried selecting Mono as default IDE, then back to VS within Unity
  • I tried reinstalling Unity from Unity’s download asst.

= The only thing that works is to reinstall Visual Studio 2017 standalone and to include both Tools for Unity and Unity (no, getting Unity from download asst. doesn’t work). This happened only 5 days ago, and I expect it to happen 1-2x per week at this rate.

Anyone have any solutions for me? I’ve tried every trick in the book.

Reported using in-game bug reporter. Happened again.

Case 901230. One thing I noticed is this:

“The project file was unloaded”. If I try to search for something in the solution, it’s never found – somehow the project is being detached immediately.

OMG RESOLVED! This was the worst experience I’ve had so far, so I’m stoked that I found an answer. Hopefully this answer pops up on google when someone else has this issue. Somehow features just randomly get uninstalled from VS2017.

I can’t find the menu option right now for the EXACT screenshot, but I got the biggest clue for the solution here:

I right clicked solution at the top >> Install missing features

Whewwww it really reminds you how bad Mono is compared to VS2017 haha, so spoiled

Sorry to kind of necro the thread, but this was yet another root cause of the oft-reported ‘IntelliSense not working’ problem in VS2017 for Unity - thank you i42-Xblade for the solution
