I’m looking at some strange behavior on Unity 3.5.6f4
The “Received Shadow” not working properly.
Example:
Create a New Scene
Place a “Plane” and “Cube” on top of it.
Add direction light and change the shadow to “Hard/Soft”
Turn off “Received Shadow” on “Plane” inspector.
The shadow of Cube is still visible on plane…
This problem did not occur in Unity 3.5.5f4
Hey I’m not having this issue, I’m on Mac OSX 10.8.2 using Unity 3.5.6f4. Have you tried testing it in a new project.
I realise that my Player Setting is using deferred lighting…
And it behave normally when using forward rending.
Does this mean deferred lighting was suppose to be like that??
You’re probably getting yourself confused by making changes in play mode which aren’t saved. Because it’s not really possible for what you describe to happen.

I’ve tested this again…
And I can confirm this again. All this is in editing mode… I did not go into Play Mode (Ctrl+P)
Hierarchy:
Cube
Directional Light
Main Camera
Plane
Render Path : Forward
In Scene(Ctrl+1) Game(Ctrl+2), the shadow are working properly…
Render Path : Deferred Lighting
In Scene(Ctrl+1), shadow is working as expected, but in Game(Ctrl+2), Plane still received shadow even “Received Shadow” is unchecked.
you still need to post an actual scene which has the bug in it. If you can do that we can verify it for you, and so can unity staff.
OK… i’ve upload a test scene in the attachment.
it has 2 scene files.
1: TestScene_Forward
2: TestScene_Deferred
Both scene having the same game object in Hierarchy with “Plane” received shadow turned off.

Yes, tried it on pc,
in deferred mode the shadow on the plane is visible.
(even that your plane has not selected receive shadows)
Same if you pick from player settings, between forward deferred.
Unless you have done this already, could you submit a bug with the projects and post the bug number so I can track it.

Shadow still appear on Scene Game, when using deferred lighting with received shadow turn off.
