Shimmer / Flash effect on Pickups

I’m trying to work out the best way to get items/models to shimmer in order to get the player’s attention. Is a shader the best route? I found a similar post on a xna forum which pointed to a cgfx shader but I don’t think they work within Unity directly. We dont have any shader programmers here so is there another decent method?

You could add some particle effects to the object. Like they do in Guild Wars, helps to show up things of interest. Or a beam of light from the sky shining down on it (faked single godray).

thanks, but neither of the options are really feasible. I was thinking more of the effect you get in Uncharted 2 and possibly resident evil on item pickups. Our game is set inside and there’s lots of possible targets to kick a football at. If everything had beams of light/godrays it would obscure a huge part of the screen and likewise lots of particle fx would be resource and screenspace hungry.

Well, I could only go on what you described in your original post.

Thread bump: can anyone tell us how to properly get a shimmer effect in Unity3D?

I need to figure out how to do this with shaders in Unity as well. If anyone has more information on using shaders to achieve shimmer effects in Unity, please help and/or provide a sample file!

The idea is that something starts to shimmer when you touch it, or when you get close to it. When you get close enough, it’s wavy like it’s on fire and almost completely translucent.

Thanks for any help
