Shiva3d vs Unity vs Quest 3d for Artist Oriented people to Learn

Which is easier to learn and use for the Artist Oriented people to Learn ?

Any thoughts ?

Well firstly. Chances are, asking that question on any forum related to any of those will get distorted results.

But I would have to say Unity is pretty damn Artist friendly. Is it easy? Well that depends on what you’re trying to do and you wont be able to avoid some scripting, be it C# or Javascript. So some kind of understanding of either of those does help, but with the amount of tutorials and help you can find online, it’s not -that- scary.

I have never used Shiva3d, but I can tell you are a 3d and 2d artist that Unity is a great engine for art oriented people. You can import assets from 3d applications easily (maya is what I use and it works very well, but I’ve heard good things about other applications), keep your layered psd files because when you build the game they will be compressed to .dds files, and overall have a very smooth workflow. Also, even Unity free has pretty powerful graphical features in my opinion (I know some people disagree with this) and you can make your own shaders, although that requires scripting knowledge unless you use a third party tool like the ones provided on this forum. Also, it comes with a good particle system.

Overall, if you have no scripting skills and a lot of art skills, unity is still pretty good, although you are invariably going to have to learn scripting for simple things like animation.

i’ve tried shiva !!! Stay in unity !!! better graphics, really more friendly and less complex to import a character without problems. Unity is THE ENGINE ( the better quality / price for such tools that are to our fingertips at a really affordable price ) really ergonomic with so many users worldwide gathered around an important community helping each other. You won’t find that with another engine. There are tools like those from neodrop’s coders team that will really improve again this fabulous software. STAY WITH UNITY 3D or you’ll make a big mistake : i’ve tried virtools ( during 2 1/2 years… what a shame !!! ), shiva, UDK and have a look at torque … )

i also tried ShiVa, AI Model scared me away, and LUA with no { }s! Probably i am just afraid to start learn everything all over, but yeah i also find most friendly to artist. All it takes is export your model as FBX to your project folder, alt+tab back into Unity application, it automatically imports it and there it is - all working simple as that

Shiva was really bad when I ran it through it’s trials about 9 months ago.

Quest3D is cool… but I think nailing down the workflow with Unity will produce a better product quicker.

Shiva has made some major steps forward actually.
