shoot'em up enemy timmings and movement

I’ve been working on a side shooter and now i have a few enemies and im wondering how should i handle the timming when they appear and the movement.

i tried to do an animation for an enemy on maya and then imported it and tried to set it up on a prefab but i dont think thats gonna work so well.

has anyone done that before and would like the share ideas? Cause i was thinking on coding the movement

By side shooter, do you mean something like Contra or a plane shooter like R-Type? The approach to enemy movement is going to be pretty different depending on exactly what kind of game you’re making.
