should I build a website for my game?

I’m wondering when is it appropriate to build a website for your game. I noticed most large games have websites like battlefield. Although some facebook games have no website at all. Such as farmville. When I go to FarmVille.com it just goes to the facebook game. battle alert also has no website. But some of them do, like mafia wars. Also, when is it appropriate to make a community and forum for your game? Angrybirds.com appear to have no apparent forum.

Not all games need a forum. Depends on the type of game. Multiplayer games I think can benefit from a forum, but single user stuff can probably do without.

I plan to update my “company” website and have a section for games. This way you can list your games and locations to download/purchase from. Just my thoughts.

I am in the thought that all games should have at least a micro site with basic information and a press kit. I agree that it really depends on the game for a forum. If there is a benefit then sure but if not I wouldn’t go through the trouble.

I love this micro site for Below: http://www.whatliesbelow.com

Website yes. Forums. later.

Until you get a decent user base and have some need for a forum, I wouldnt bother.

You should at least have a website to show off the game and it’s development progress.
Also allow people to contact you if they have more questions about the game.

A website is always a good idea, and for the sake of professionalism please purchase a valid domain name, www.wix.com/mycoolgame is not very professional.

Have a website so that if someone were to Google your game, they’ll be able to find out more from you, and not from some other random source. It doesn’t have to be complicated, even a few paragraphs about what the game is, some screenshots and a video or two is plenty. Also prominently feature some sort of contact information so that people can ask you questions and such, preferably something like info@mygamename.com, not XO_ghostfacekillaz_69@hotmail.com.

As for a forum, create threads on existing forums where it is appropriate to promote your game. Don’t bother with your own forum unless the volume of posts on these threads becomes unreasonable.
