Should I buy a G5 Powermac to develop games on Unity?

I have been offerd a chance to buy a G5 tower for £300 (around $480) is that a good price for the tower. I was planing on saveing for a mac pro, but if the g5 will meet my needs for a year or so while im still studdying ill be happy, or should i wait and get a mac pro?

ill get more details on the g5 next week.

thanks

I think you should wait, because it is already an outdated system. Plus, there are a lot of things you might want to use that may have trouble with the G5, like Blender or other applications.

The concern from me is that you will basically spend a fair bit of money painting yourself into a corner until you are able to get a more suitable platform.

yeah, thats what I was thinking, apple have seemed to realy kill the pre intel units with snow leopard, so i recon its not long that other developers stop suporting them! also the lack of suport for blender is annoying. Ill keep my eyes open for mac pro then

update
blender are still suporting power pc

Maybe Blender was a bad example, but the premise of fading support is likely to hold true.

The current Macbooks should have a price drop soon. That’s what I use.

I have a G5 tower and it works very well. As long as you don’t care about Unity iPhone (which is Intel only), it runs Unity, Blender, Photoshop, etc. nicely. Since you’re only going to be using it for a year or so, whether it’s “outdated” is irrelevant. I’d go for it; $480 is a pretty good price, but it depends on how much that’s worth to you.

Ummm. I’m not planing to do any iPhone development for a while, and if I was I’d like to try SIO2, and for that I can use my during MacBook pro (where the keybord, battery do not work and it has a habbit of crashing ) for iPhone development, but the g5 is only going to be used till July next year and then sold, so £300 may seem like a lot but if I can sell it for £200 then it works out cheaper (cost per day) than keeping a mac pro for 3 years
