I REALLY want to get into VR. But I don’t want to buy too early. But then again I don’t want to miss the boat.
I like the sound of Samsung Gear VR, but then I’ve also been reading about Google Daydream VR which says it will work with a Google Pixel phone which isn’t even out yet. I don’t have a big budget either.
I just want to dive into the VR world and plug myself into the matrix already!
$275. S6 Works for GearVR, also so you could buy one now or later. With Daydream being a lot more expensive, and a lot less people have it (GearVR did massive giveaways, etc), I don’t see a lot of value in starting with that platform. If a cardboard/GearVR game gets traction, sure- port it over.
Annoyingly I have a Nexus 7 tablet, and a Galaxy Y phone,
neither of which support the Google Cardboard app. (Unless there is somewhere I can download the APK?)
I would even try Google Cardboard on a laptop screen just to see the 3D effect, but don’t know how you would do this. I can’t even get Unity to display a binocular view in the editor. (It must be possible!)
So other than this it would require buying a new phone or headset.
I agree. You can also run Google Cardboard apps on GearVR with help of this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.cardboardappforgearvr&hl=en
But GearVR apps apps are better, because they can use gyro sensor inside GearVR device. The gyro sensor inside the phone, which can be used by Google Cardboard apps has a big latency time, while one inside the GearVR reacts immediately. Then GearVR is also equipped with touchpad which you can use for input.
