Should I make my first mobile game for Android or Ios

Hi I’m in the process of creating the design and about to make my first mobile game and first game myself from scratch that isn’t following tutorials. Anyway I’ve been trying to google to find a clear answer and I can’t find a clear answer to which platform out of android or ios should I initially focus on.

I know technically Unity gives you the functionality to create a build for both but I’m wondering is there main key differences such as the market trends, technical difficulties, costs of advertising that will help me make the decision of which platform to focus on first.

I know this is just the ios subsection of the forum but most tutorials I’ve come across are focused on publishing to the playstore and most unity games at least a few years ago for mobile were published on the playstore. So I’m hoping to get a balanced perspective on the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Thanks

Desktop

I’m not wanting to start on desktop as I’ve seen mobile games generally easier to develop and in some cases more opportunity financially. Can you please elaborate on why you’ve said to focus on Desktop…

iOS was the way to go a few years ago, but it is more even now. Android might be slightly simpler to register for.

For your first game after doing tutorials, I suggest go with whatever equipment you have. It’s an easy choice to go Android if you don’t have a Mac for example. But even just which type of phone you have can be the decider.

Either will give the opportunity to see if the game has potential, and will not limit future possibilities across both.

Thanks for the information how/where did you find out the android and ios markets for games are now more even?

I have an android device and from what I’m taking you’re recommending to go with what I have as it won’t be that difficult to publish on both platforms and to focus more on creating a game that has potential?

Mobile market is saturated with pails of rubbish. You will compete with theses. Meaning you wont make money, if that what you after.

Desktop at least gives you field to explore options. Special if you starting out. And you wont need to fight with range of different compatibility mobile devices.

I try to keep up with how the market is progressing. News stories such as this show it is now more even: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-09-17-newzoo-android-games-will-earn-more-revenue-than-ios-in-2019

It is very difficult to make money with your first game. The top 50 take 76% of all revenue for example (https://venturebeat.com/2018/06/21/apptopia-ios-games-peak-quickly-and-top-50-take-76-of-revenues/). About 25% of developers make less than $100 (https://smallbusiness.chron.com/average-revenue-iphone-game-60261.html). You’ll be lucky to make back the price of an iPhone, so make use of what you have. If you get some success, you can then buy the iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc. and port easily to iOS. You might make money with your second, third, or later game (this isn’t to suggest quantity over quality, 1 good game is more likely to make money than 10 weaker games). Don’t tie up money too early.
