Show Your Work!

I often visit “work in progress” and “made with unity” forum sections. It surprises me that so few people share anything. I mean there are probably millions Unity users. I would really like to see more amateur prototypes and other hobbyist level stuff. It’s really fun to see what other people are building. I really enjoy running home-made stuff. Why is to so uncommon to share test builds or design experiments?

Maybe there is a need for a new section called “Experiments”? Something where anything goes?

I always am posting lately in my projects thread in the WIP section:

I try and share something every now and then to get feedback on mechanics and stuff before it hits the mobile stores.

I love browsing through all the in progress stuff too, it’s always cool and inspirational seeing what they are working on.

are you only wanting to see those made with unity? if you are not restricted, you could probably spend a loooong time looking at various game jam results  or also look for game developer blogs. I try to share my own progress from time to time, but due to time constraints it might be sluggish updates atm, but I have almost 100 blog entries, mostly focused on game development and stuff if you are interested  https://fartoindie.wordpress.com/

I will share a game I made with Unity and just recently released. I have made and published a few games before but this is my first with Unity. Still have a lot to learn but hopefully will have more to share soon. How about yourself? Anything to share with us? :stuck_out_tongue:

Here are the links if you want to try it out (free). Android | iOS

Work done in Unity is often shared on other sites than the Unity forum as most people want to share their work with a broader audience than “other developers working in Unity”.

x.com lots of exciting stuff. Good resource for finding active unity projects.
Reddit - Dive into anything has a lot of show-off and experiments.
https://madewith.unity.com/ has a lot of finished and nearly finished projects. It is a pretty cool resource for realizing what is possible with Unity.

Oh, and this is what I am working on at the moment:

I wonder how many might not post their stuff, because of embarrassment  Honestly I had to think twice, if I should post my blog here, since I feel like I could have done more and better with my time and that I feel completely noobish when it comes to making games :o

Thanks for the tips!

Stone Age looks very nice!

What I would like to see more is publishing of test builds, especially for cool PC games made for Steam. That’s where my heart lies.

I’m working on a voxel engine at the moment. Not much to show yet.

Stone age looks pretty cool. I’m looking forward to seeing more of what people are working on as well.

I’ve been putting off writing up a WIP thread until I had a playable demo.
But I have been sharing stuff on my twitter feed.

But this thread has convinced me to set up a WIP thread soon (this weekend).

About my game: The eXtinct: Prelude

It’s a SHMUP, or shoot-em-up game where your ship fires based on the different elements of the music.
The game features music which I’ve been writing over the past 10 years.
It also has deep story which I’m in the process of fleshing out, just how I tell it.

It’s still mostly incomplete and the art direction may change later on, but I’m constantly working on that game when I’m not at my day job:

Shooting based on music? That’s a unique mechanic! Even full-time it takes ages to do anything solo. Be sure to post some videos.

Yeah, it takes forever to do the simplest thing (saving, UI, etc.) especially if you’re trying to get it all really highly polished.
I’ve got a single video showing off the mechanics on my twitter (can’t embed on this forum):

let me know what you think.

Graphics is rather abstract. Music seems minimalist. Note that for mobile your game will require soundtrack all the time to play. This means that people will need headphones in many situations.

This was the closest I came to releasing something for Android (WEBGL is just the demo, controls are spam-tap A, D, SPACE): Game Jolt - Share your creations

However I kinda ran out of ideas on the sci-fi level since I don’t play those types of simplistic games. Overall when I showed it to someone, they liked the graphics style and mechanics of the creepy dungeon level, but I sort of poured all my ideas into 1 level. I don’t want to make a 2nd level that has identical gameplay but just looks different, so until I think of something to add to the game the project is on pause :frowning:

Finally set up a WIP thread for my game, in case anyone is interested in checking it out: [WIP][GAME] The eXtinct: Prelude (shmup) - Community Showcases - Unity Discussions

It’s a pity Web player is no longer around, cus I would have liked to do a quick demo. (I rather not try to deal with Web GL for this game atm)

Here’s a project I made with Unity and some freinds (credits in game) for Kongregate game jam. which was made in a week. Play Potion Blast, a free online game on Kongregate. It’s pretty good I think for the time span, I was the programmer. As far as challenges go, it was my first time ever publishing a game so trying to work out kongregates API and just uploading it was troubling, but I eventually got it. Making the background have the connecting borders effect took awhile too, but in the end the game was so small you cant even tell. Interestingly enough, almost half of the scripts were editor scripts, which made level design a lot easier too. Our artist didn’t finish all the assets on time, so there’s a few default panels and shapes, but its not too bad.

Looks OK, you do need to get your art together

I can’t get past Level 7. Either I really suck or something is wrong. The game idea is nice, it would be cool to maybe have more kinds of cannons and objects to throw.

Btw, 2 years a go I made a Flash game which still floats around. It’s called Scrabik and it’s a little word puzzle game.

@ajtuana That’s a real solid game for your first one! Nice idea, funny concept- really like the graphics and the small details you put into the animations! Thought the ball of twine could have a slightly faster initial speed- acceleration seems to be fine. Also thought it was game over after losing the last heart but it kept going (habit of retro games I guess). But good, fun game all round-great job!

I’m still working on my first game. I’ve tried a few different engines before settling on Unity. First, I used Construct 2, then got into 3d modeling, so I switched to Unity, then tried out Unreal for a few months before coming back to Unity. Now that I’ve gotten used to Unity, I’m probably going to stick with it. I’ve also been learning programming for the last year or so (I was an art major). I’ve played with a few smaller projects, but this game is the one I’ve worked on the most (and the only serious effort so far).

Anyway, here is a video of my game. It started out as a indoor-dungeon RPG, but then I wanted more open gameplay, so I made it more of an RTS. Then, I ended up making it into more of a historical rather than fantasy type setting. It will be more of a smaller-scale RTS, so kind of like a RPG/RTS/Survival hybrid. So, less focus on building tons of units, and more focus on keeping them alive.

Now, the game is not really ready to show off. I’ve only shown it to a few people on a couple forums I’ve frequented. I have a lot of work to do. I need to redo the HUD, work on A.I., do the music, menus, and so on. It probably has another year to of development.

I’m trying to learn as much as I can while building it, so I haven’t been in a huge hurry to get it done. I’ve been focusing on learning c# programming lately since I feel like my art skills are already good enough for now.

Here is a video. This one shows off the weather effects, snow footprints, and other stuff. Feel free to check out my older videos for other updates such as animations or object interaction.

Again, if you’d like to see the progression of the game, check out my older videos. I’ll be putting out a new video in a few days talking about group formations since I’m shifting the game to be a party-based game of maybe 6 people.
