Silo 2 (3D modelling program) - for sale on Steam for $47.99

This is a VERY cheap price for a 3D modelling program… have not yet tried it myself but looks decent enough!

Note, apparently it’s just a modeller and doesn’t have rendering or animation.

I’ve worked with it for about 8 years for commercial games, product and architectural visualizations, actually its open in this moment and i’m working on a model for a client… its also used by some studios for AAA titles such as Sonic All Stars (the first one)

this is one of my models made a couple of years back

I cant recommend it enough!!! Its very easy to use, and the results are equivalent of your creativity.

NOTE: things you should consider before buying are:

  • this is a modeler, it doesn’t do renders (it actually does with external plugins)
  • it doesnt do rigging or animation.
  • and its no longer updated

so i suggest you visit the homepage or get a demo to make an informed decision… for me Silo has paid for itself over a thousand times, i’ve used it for characters, hard surface, sub-d, prop and level design, as well as Unwrapping and NM creation, it exports well to OBJ… and its very light on the processor.

and then $47.99

and as opposed to blender which is FREE with all features and which is continuously updated with a thriving community my question is … why promote this ?

because not all love blender, myself included

Shaderbytes, my work is closely related to deadlines and delivering a solid end product, the money i spent for silo (200$ back in the day) is NOTHING, compared to the time and energy i saved using this modeling package. If you work in advertising, you already know what inhuman deadlines and amounts of work there is on a daily basis.

In no way i want to critique Blender which is an amazing piece of software, even if it wasn’t FREE, but it was initially designed as an internal tool at NeoGeo, which means you need direct training. Sadly real life advertising/game dev is nothing like what we studied back at the University… and in such a crazy environment, you rather have a fast Honda and get away with your tasks, than have the Optimus Prime and don’t even know how to maneuver him.

Hi guys,
I need your Help. I saw the special promotion for Silo on steam and i´m not sure about “what are they selling” !! the pro version 2.2 for Comercial Use? Or it´s just the student version (2.0/2.1) ?and can i use it without running Steam in the background?

I am not a graphics person, I am just a hobbyist and I often use free models I find online. My biggest issue is converting high poly to low poly models. Can Silo do this?

Zaddo67, for high poly to low poly I’ve heard 3D Coat is good, but Blender can also be used to retopo your models.

I was thinking about purchasing Silo 2, but came across Nvil which seems quite good and is still free as it’s alpha. See http://digitalfossils.com/ for details - they have new downloads fairly often as they continue to improve the app. I’m still learning Blender and also use Cheetah 3D. NVil seemed stable when I took it for a test run and had some cool context menus to access the commands. At startup it prompts you to use Silo or another apps key bindings in Nvil, but I hadn’t used these other apps much so I just selected the default bindings. NVil is currently Windows only, and not sure if that will change or not later on. I dual boot my Mac to Windows 7 to use Nvil or for playing Windows only games to take a break.

I’m also playing with Sculptris to see if I can create some worthwhile models and convert to low poly in Blender.

Thanks Hoodoo. I have played with Blender and managed to work out how to use it to reduce the Poly count. I was interested in Silo if it was easy to use and intuitive, I find tools like Blender very difficult to work out how to do even simple things. (I think I am going to have to invest the time and learn)

I absolutely love silo. I recommend it to all

Yes, Silo is a really great tool. I been using it everyday just about learning and learning. It takes the hassle away and just lets the art come in. Sure it does not have Rigging/Animation, but there are many tools that can do that and for a few bucks use Mixamo. otherwise enjoy this great tool. For its last update about 2 years ago it still seems quite powerful and easier than Blender by all counts of the imagination.

Shame - £30 on PC and not available for OSX via steam. £80 via Mac AppStore. I guess it’s still great value but,…
