Since when NPOT is smaller than POT?

I’m confused. I’ve imported an NPOT texture and was planning to make it POT to reduce the size, but I got an increase this time from 1.3MB (2.7 with alpha) to 2MB (4 with alpha). Using Unity 2021.3.8f1


How that is possible? Am I missing something? Are we free from thinking about POT-NPOTness?

As far as I understand, it depends on the compression, which depends on the platform and import settings. Previously I was working mostly with mobile, and I used to see a lot of POT warnings, so I just took “POT Everything” as a general rule. Be careful, don’t do as I did, check your compression requirements first.
