Hi i’m trying to export the .skp file from sketchup and uploading into unity but its not picking up the right format. I should mention i am using the free sketchup version from the web.
I’ve tried both versions from 2017 - 2021 but do not work. Any idea what i am doing wrong?
I’m just exporting and opening directly in unity.
Hi, confirmed this is an issue for 2021.3
The same files work for 2020.
I’ve logged a bug report. Jira Service Management
Hi @dan_soqqle ,
we are aware of some issues on macos with the version of the sketchup sdk we are using.
We are in the process of updating to the latest version of the SDK for every Unity release (from 2021.3 to the most recent ones) but have hit some issues in windows that need deeper investigation and unfortunately delay this fix.
thanks. for the time being i am opening the .skp in 2020 and then copy pasting the scene into 2021. i think that should work as a temporary workaround
Unfortunately there isn’t really a workaround. I tried to save the 2020 imported model and open it in 2021 but the model disappears.
Further, when i tried to export the sketchup fbx and open it in unity 2021, the transform positions become 0.
Hi @dan_soqqle !
I’m adding this here just in case you or someone else is looking for details on this.
You can use Sketchup files as usual on Mac only if you use the Intel version of the Editor.
We have not supported Sketchup on Silicon so far, but as @bastien_humeau mentioned above we are in the (delayed) process of updating the SDK. Once in, this should allow us to bring the support to Silicon.
Thanks for the update! (Un)fortunately, i moved to 3ds max given these issues . . .
There seems to be no warning when importing a project with skp files in it. Can you give us a timeline when you will support them on Silicon?
Hey there,
Great news today as we received a new version of the Sketchup SDK which does support Apple Silicon and fixes this issue.
The new SDK is being backported to all Unity versions, down to 2020.3LTS so every currently active version of Unity will have the fix as soon as possible.

Thanks for the update, this is great news!
We are currently upgrading from 2020 LTS to 2021 LTS, this will help us with the many Sketchup models we use.
I don’t think it’s the problem with Unity version. In my opinion, recent Sketchup file versions (2021~2023) are problematic. I use Unity2020.2.6f1 and I could import the older version of .skp file to Unity before (2 years ago). Back then, it was possible to download different version of .skp files (e.g. Sketchup 2017, Sketchup 2019, etc). I don’t remember the exact version, but at least some version worked fine with Unity. But now, there is no such option from Sketchup side for Free Web version, and I have the same import problem as @dan_soqqle in Unity 2020.
There is also a related thread from Sketchup Forum. The workaround solution suggested from there is to use the older version of Sketchup (unfortunately it’s not easy to get the free old version of Sketchup these days)
I hope this problem is fixed either by Unity or Sketchup quickly!
