Skybox Quality Terrible

Edit: Figured it out, the quality of my skybox tanked because I had a ‘Tonemapping Color Grading’ script on the camera. Not sure why it degraded the quality of the skybox so much.

I’ve used a skybox in my game for a long time, years, and haven’t changed it. It used to look great in both the desktop editor and on my iPhone. But I just lately noticed that when I send it to my iPhone the quality decreased by a huge amount.

You can see the attached picture both before and now. I’ve tried changing the skybox images’ import settings to just about everything. Difft texture types, alpha sources, I override for iOS and choose every format, difft max sizes, and qualities. I even tried taking the images into Photoshop and erasing a little dot and saving as an 16 bit image, because that was an old trick to ensure the iPhone was using every channel. I’m starting to feel stumped.

I opened an old build of my game I made in August, everything in the skybox still looks perfect, like I remembered. I took a screenshot of it, that’s where I got the before picture from. I also included what my Inspector looks like when I click on one of the skybox images. You can see the ‘compression’ is grayed out. I’m not sure if it’s always been like that or not. The skybox looks good on my desktop, when I’m playing in the editor, so no change there. Only when I actually build the game. Some changes I’ve made lately to the game, I added some objects with transparency, until then everything had been opaque, they’re material has z-write turned on. I also am using Unity 5.5 beta now.

I included one of the images from my skybox… it’s called ‘SkyBox-Cloudy-Back.png’ just in case anyone wanted to try it in their skybox. It looks fine in the editor. But when you build it to an iPhone, the quality takes a nosedive.

Figured it out myself… the tone mapping color grading script Unity just came out with was degrading the quality.
