Skyrim creation kit released

Revolution in modding, submission system for mods has been lifted to perfection. Users no longer need to hunt for good mods on dozens of different pages and download files and worring about where to put them. Creation kit looks great, but whole submission system makes it so powerful, i hope that this system gets spread to other games too.
Tools otherwise seem to be very similar to Oblivion, especially editor.

Although its great that they added this, did not Starcraft 2 already do something like this? With their own mod submission system? Think some one even did a World of Starcraft mod that got a lot of press.

Mind you, I dont care much for Starcraft but love this. Ponder if they will somehow tie it in with the console… would love player content making it into the XBox

Too bad I already stopped playing Skyrim so that I could get back to work. Anyway, as I understand, this kit will let your mods become available over at Steam. Isn’t this going to cause potential problems? For example, wouldn’t it limit what modders can submit? What if someone made a Superman, Batman or Ironman mod like they’ve done in GTA4? Will Steam allow those types of mods to be downloaded from them? Won’t there be legal issues that they would face unlike if the makers themselves release those mods independently? What about controversial mods, such as the Killable Children mod or nudity mods? Doesn’t Steam have some kind of restriction that won’t allow modders to submit these kinds of stuff?

Fortunately, it seems that you can still release your mod the good old traditional way without being hindered by such limitations.

Bah, just saw the vid… (cant listen to audio but seems mods must go through steam.)

Was hoping an in-game tool.

Mods don’t have to go through steam. You can upload them anywhere just like in previous games. Uploading to steam is optional.

Yea, figured tha bit, but the whole portal aspect of it is just managed by Steam. There is no chance for you to get a mod portal in the 360 nor use the thing without having steam (although I have no clue if the PC version of the game requires Steam anyways.)

Microsoft and Sony have to approve all content that makes it onto their platform. I really doubt they will give modders the same ammount of freedom as shown on the PC. Maybe a simple level editor but scripting I doubt. And Im pretty sure the PC version does require steam.

Wait what, there’s no mod support for consoles at all. Or did they announce that recently?

I don’t want Scream mucking up my load order. I’ll stick with TES Nexus.

Wait what. By scream did you mean steam? If so I don’t see how it will.

I thought Steam did automatic updates on the mods you’ve previously downloaded. If Steam automatically updates the mods you have while you’re in the middle of a game set, won’t that change your load order?

game set - set of mods that have been ordered through OBMM

Define “middle of a game SET”. I don’t get what you mean by that. In the middle of a game? In the middle of mod list?
Steam updates mods only when you launch the game. And I see no reason why it would change the stack order after updating.
Also updating is most likely optional, though I can’t vouch for that.

This releasing on steam for headlining Mods while allowing other’s to go out on 3rd party site sounds like a good idea. It’s a sound step in the right direction but there is much a ways to go.

If you asked me, I’d say that the best thing a game like Skyrim could do is have a continuing open source project where content and projects were overseen by a small staff. (The game made a billion dollars, surely they can afford a few people to run the mod community). And have the community work to build teams and encourage commitment through things like reputation rather than the mess that is the current mod community. Then have the official modded version available as in game content from the start menu and updating it regularly.

But back to the Skyrim finally having an SDK. Awesome. I know that it won’t let me change game mechanics or see content on consoles (thanks Microsoft, Sony, and soon Nintendo), but freakin’ awesome

This is great! I wish more games would take this kind of amazing community initiative. Hope to see some great mods coming in, I heard the editor is pretty fun and easy to use by some non-game dev friends :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmm… I shall look this over, and see if I agree with it.

It’s completely broken. You’ll be stuck with small mods unless third-party tools can get parts of it working (like terrain LOD generation). The entire heightmap editor/generator is broken and there’s a major navmesh bug. That means no new areas.

Bethesda don’t seem to be doing much.

not interested until there’s a chance of multiplayer

Raymix, there is currently no way that the game could transfer that much information back and forth between the two machines. Skyrim has far too much persistent world information and the only way that it would be remotely possible is if it were run on one machine.

That’s what peer2peer or dedicated server is for. It’s entirely possible and could be done if there was more code access.

Maybe, but I think the connection would need to be at least a T1 line. Games like WoW are specifically tailored to be played online, where as Elder Scrolls is programed around the assumption that there is pretty much an infinite amount of storage that can be accessed fairly fast to track every little change you make in the world. If it tried to relay this over a connection it would take far too long and there would be too much persistent data.

Right now my personal save file is coming up to a GIG in size. Do you want to have to download a GIG of information just to join my server?

EDIT: Oh, I also feel the need to point out that asking “Why don’t they make Elder Scrolls multiplayer?” is like asking “Why don’t they make Die Hard a romantic comedy?” It’s simply not its genre. Some people like the classic first person dungeon crawler style. But if they wanted to do an Elder Scrolls game that was specifically made for multiplayer as an offshoot title I would not complain.
