Slow Photon Joey for iOS

Hey everyone,

Found out about Unity not too long ago and had zero previous programming experience. My first iOS game, Slow Photon Joey, is now available in the App Store. Please let me know what you think.

Thank you!

I think you did an excellent job knowing you had zero programming experience. The lightspeed effect looks really nice, especially combined with Joey’s voice.

Thanks, man. Appreciate it!

After playing it a bit more, here’s some more feedback, in order of highest annoyingness

  • I was “shocked” it wasn’t a universal app after installing it on my ipad. Weird enough there isn’t even an ipad version. Please make it an universal app!
  • I want gamecenter support for leaderboards. I know I can beat your score! There are two easy options, use the native api build into unity or use prime31 plugin.
  • The controls still feels unnatural, after playing it for a while. I’m curious to know why I have keep my finger down to collect the blues. I would turn it around, on touch down would do speed up and you can always collect blues, anytime.
  • The feedback of the blackhole killing/eating you is very subtle, at first I didn’t understand why I couldn’t move anymore.

Furthur more, I really the game. I love the galaxy background graphics. Can you explain what technique you used for that? And how did you do the green blobs? I’m absolutely facinated by how dynamic and alive the background, stars and blobs are.

Keep up the good work!
(Maybe you’re already working on an update

Thanks for the additional feedback! I am working on an update and hope to have it out within a week. I’m confused about the iPad setting, does this mean the app isn’t playable on iPad or just not advertised as compatible? Haven’t had the opportunity to test on one, but if it’s working I’ll get that change in, too.

We’ll add leaderboards to the next major update if it’s not rocket science hehe. I know what you mean about the release-to-boost mechanic. We’ll look into changing that.

For now I’m putting out a quick update with a couple bug fixes and have also made him blink red as an almostdead-gtfo indicator.

Glad you like the background, it took some messing around with. The blue (then red) spacey background is something i whipped up in Photoshop. On top of that is a particle system emitting a very tiny star sprite with randomized white and teal colors. And finally a “cloud haze” layer on top, which was also created in Photoshop. It’s just clouds with very low opacity using the mobile particle additive shader. The background and haze move at different rates to give a distant, almost 3D effect.

The green gas clouds are just a particle emitter with some nice settings and the additive shader is used here again to give that gooey effect.

Thats great to hear, can’t wait to get the update
Turning Joey red sounds like the perfect solution.

About the iPad. On the AppStore (on the iPad) it is showing up but as an iPhone app, which means its at the lower iPhone resolution. What I think has happend is that in your PlayerSettings the target is set to iPhone instead of iPhone+iPad, see the attached image for what I mean.

Thanks for explaining the background, I’m never too old to learn.
If you need any help or testing on the iPad, just give me shout.

Version 1.1 is currently waiting for review. I’ll get the iPad specific changes in and build for universal next update. Gotta get this small update in to bump us up since we’re now getting 1 download/day haha. Thanks again for the feedback and suggestions!

So, hows the update coming along?
Can’t wait to play it at full Retina iPad resolution!

Still waiting for review. Made the mistake of updating xcode and unity which forced me to make it iPhone 5 compatible. Gonna update to universal once I can get my hands on an iPad to make sure it works. Shouldn’t be too long now

Sooo, how’s that universal app coming along?
