Small demo of my game released!

WinOS here:

MacOS here:

This is not an alpha or beta build, just a small demo where I play with some design ideas!

The first scene is a puzzler, the second is a small dungeon!

Please, please, please, READ THE README or you will be lost!!! And yes I know the first scene is a wee bit dark, its supposed to be dark, but maybe not quite that dark!

I have seen lots of people going to my blog (supposedly to get the demo) but no comments. I can take them good or bad, I am a big boy!

Also if you get stuck, let me know and we can talk about it here!

The hardest part to master is carrying small objects. Do you think I should change it so that you click once to “stick” the object to the mouse object and then click again to release (LMOUSE) or throw (RMOUSE)?

I know no one has commented, so I thought I would give you my thoughts on why.

Maybe they didn’t download your game? My take on this is if you don’t have a web demo then I won’t bother. Partly because I am very cautious about downloading things from the internet. Also most people just won’t reply for one reason or another(lazy, didn’t like it, unhelpful, etc.). Besides it’s fairly easy to build and deploy to the web and I think you have a better chance of getting responses.

Just a thought.

I thought I would download it to help you out but the download said 2 hours to download. Definitely not going to get anyone to download with that slow of speed.

I knew I would get replies asking about a web version - I will monkey with this today, but not sure I will do it.

I do understand your concern though.

wadoman,

Thanks for being a test subject, appreciated. I will move them to a hosted site.

Yeah, I think it’s going to be difficult to get many people to download 180mb just to check something out. You’ll probably get a better response with some screen shots and a demo video. If those look good enough, then you might get a few people willing to wait for such a large download.

Even then, it’s still very large for a demo. I suspect you would get more downloads if it were about 1/4 the size.

The screen shots you have on your blog look interesting. I might try to download it when I have more free time, but I would be much more likely to give it a run if the file size was significantly reduced.

OK guys - anyone wanting the WinOS version, you can get it here:

I am working on a web player, but right now it crashes when building!

Anyone know how I can “bundle” the MacOS stand alone? On windows it shows as an .app file, which windows see’s as a folder. I do not have access to a Mac.

For screenshots and videos, please check out my dev blog.

hi krankyboy,

the .app folder is right. .zip or .rar it for download and everything will be fine  you could also make a .dmg, but thats level 2

Hi Kranky,

I gave the game a short go on a computer at work.
The computer isn’t great (neither is mine). Indeed the first level is very dark.

The framerate wasn’t great, I’d say about 15, but that could be the computer’s fault :).

I did find the controls a little awkward, you can look around holding the right mouse button. (anyone can beg me but I’ll never read instructions before play, usually find out all features during half of the game)
And from what I can remember when you go forward the animation looks like your running like hell.

The graphics/textures look good and the game has atmosphere. I didn’t get far enough to run into trouble so can’t say anything about that.

I’ll try it at home and play it through.

Did you make this by yourself? Or do you have a game company?

Good luck,

I tried downloading the file 2 times when opening the file i get the error message “CRC failed…\sharedassets1.assets. The file is corrupt”

There may be some missing or corrupt files in the WinOS.zip, just to let you know I did try 2wice to play this game.

I am a one man team. Thanks for feedback.

Please remember his is not an alpha/beta, just me testing some concepts such as, small puzzles, AI, skill useage (you can detect secret items in second scene).

All I can say KrankyBoyGames is that you are a BEAST. It’s not like you see a one guy crew creating a game like this every day. I for one am a artist and I am learning unity scripting language and I do have a small prototype game I am working on by myself and it’s a lot of work when your designing, modeling, texturing, scripting, animating, and etc for a game. I was able to test you game out and it was a little hard getting started due to the fact that I didn’t read the instructions at all. To lazy. So I’ll just talk about the art. I think starting off the art looks okay. I think the models could be a lot better as well as the textures. I don’t think level needs to be as dark as it is but I guess that’s what you are shooting for. GUI look good I guess but I’m not really picky on gui stuff just the 3d stuff. I think once you iron out the art and the game play mechanics then you will have something great.
Note: when I say you are a beast it’s a good thing. It’s more or less a metaphor because you are doing something that the big game studios would have a multi man team doing.

Eleventh,

where did you download from? Because I know others have been able to get it.

Not sure I think of myself as a beast when I program, maybe when I play soccer, but not when I program…

Anyway, as a one man team, the biggest challenge I have is art assets. I have zero skill there and no time to learn. I have to buy what I have. So I am stuck in this regard. What I can do is make the gameplay unique and while the game is not there yet - hopefully it will be.

The next mini-demo I do will be a free-for-all area scene where you and multiple enemy AI monsters go toe to toe. Should be fun. This will firm up the combat part of the game (spells, etc…).

KrankyBoyGames, I completely understand you at the moment I am also developing as a one-man (in my case one-woman) team, and It IS very difficult. Creating art assets is time consuming takes alot longer than you would think especially if you want them to look good professional.

I got the link directly from your blog.

Eleventhhour,

If you still have an interest, try the link at the top of the post.

I do enjoy being a one person team, but there are times I wish there was someone else out here Western Canada who I could work with. Since I am a bit of a control freak, its likely best that I wear all hats, but it is frustrating having to rely on others for all my art content.

Same here, ok I will try the link again. KrankyBoy, you should look for someone here that is avalable to work for either free or very cheap to help with the art, I would offer to help you but I’m trying to make a demo of my game in the next few weeks.

No its OK - I would not want “free” help (and can’t afford paid help). I enjoy buying the right models for the game, just sucks not being able to customize, etc…

Either way - you have to admit its a fun hobby!?
