Smultron Discontinued

Unitron has never been an entirely satisfactory editor, and now Smultron is being abandoned. (It is open source, so I guess Unity folk could take over maintenance…)

Thoughts?

There are generally tons of actually good editors out there. A good editor makes all the difference in the world. Definitely look for one you like and don’t be afraid to pay for one – it’ll pay for itself if it suits your style.

On both platforms you have the powerful and free Emacs and VI. On Windows I used to use UltraEdit32 (not sure how up to date they keep it these days) and on Mac I really enjoy TextMate.

I’m sure everyone has their own recommendations, though.

I already own several programmers’ text editors, but Unitron is based on Smultron, so I was wondering if there’s any plan to proceed beyond this.

I’m not especially happy with the integration of Unity (JavaScript) into any text editor right now. I’ve heard good things about Visual Studio if you’re coding in C#, but I’m not and don’t plan to.

UT has said before that they’re interested in having MonoDevelop work well with Unity; as far as I know that’s still the case, although it needs work before it could be considered as a replacement.

Monodevelop would be a nice option, agreed.

Wow, lame. :frowning: I liked the fact that this app wasn’t cluttered and loaded so fast.

I like it too. It’s not as if Unitron suddenly stopped working though.

Maybe not on your machine. My copy is sitting in a corner, crying.
