So how to get a job with Unity3d?

Lately I have been wasting my time, writing cover letters and updating my resume. But for 4 years now, it seems as my job applications are automatically replied with a template letter such as:

Hello [your name],
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to consider you for the [position] position with us at [Company Name]. 
We have carefully reviewed your experience and qualifications for this position, and unfortunately, we have decided not to move forward with your application at this time.

I mean, was my experience with unity actually a waste of time?
Nobody seems to care about my experience nor my politeness. As if my applications are being ignored and a ironic reply, that is a copy paste every time.
What is happening? Is it time to commit suicide? I mean this is the only area that I am actually good at and now I cant get an income. If I learned something for about 10 years now, after school. I didn’t have time to earn “papers” that are so required even if you want to get a job for fishing nowadays.

So life for our generation is over right? I mean what would you do. If you cant get a job. Would you start stealing? I live in a harsh area, winters are cold and wet. So this month I will loose my networking access and also become homeless. All my ID documents are outdated and nobody wants to work with me. So I guess this is what you get when you work on a topic that is interesting to you


let’s say I create a game with monetization. It still wont earn me a stable income. Heck if the app doesn’t get advertisement, its considered as a failure, be it the next Call Of Duty or Grand Theft Auto. It always comes down to the marketing side.

So what gives, why did I waste my time with unity at all, if the end result is being broke and homeless???
For now I see that Unity is only suitable for those, who have rich parents and are teenagers, living with parents. Because for me, I might be the worlds greatest physicist, but if I don’t get an income, I’d still cut my throat at the end of the year, because what is it worth in the end? Your creation will not earn money if you don’t have strong friends capable of advertising your product. Community matters, absolutely. But when the community decides to damage your product, by raising a dispute? To a product that seemed to be loved by many. What does it say to me?

I sure hope that these “reply” letters are fake and controlled by my jealous ISP instead, because no matter where I send my job application I always, ALWAYS, get the exact same sentece:

First I taught I am doing something wrong, but when I sent my application to a friends company, I was on a Skype conversation after a few days 


Now could some marketing specialist or a CEO, or somebody who knows the bizshizniz better. Explain me, why on earth did I waste 10 years coding in Unity3D when I only get ironically discriminated. You know writing a cover letter is considered as a waste for a programmer.

Also there was this one case, where I got into an actual interview with some other developers. It seemed as if there was one other person who also was at the interview, as a graphic designer, she was a girl so obviously she had an advantage(not being sexist, but this is how things actually turned out
). So after the conversation, I was asked to do a test exercise. My assignment was to write a shader that makes the mesh look like a jelly. I instantly noticed that is one heck of a task for a new recruiter (dont you think? soft body physics and all
)
So I began my exploration at DotProducts and simplistic math to keep things simple. I was able to finish some sort of a shader that created a somewhat look of a “jellyish” object. Later on they replied, that the my code is bullshit and worth nothing, that I am unable to do teamwork (tho the girl added me in facebook and we had a chat, that she actually got the position, without a test assignment) and also that I should learn from them and PAY TO THEM INSTEAD. Well I guess this is the Game Development in Estonia
 You have to pay for your work, fair enough right?

So my question to this community is, how many people have ACTUALLY planted a job with Unity?
Is it all a marketing bullshit???

Any open positions for a janitor from Estonia? (I once did videogames, but the pay was shit)

There’s plenty of remote work available at Ukraine (where I live). And potentially everywhere.
Have you tried LinkedIn?

Don’t bother with writing email to the companies, that never worked for me.
Let them reach you instead.

There’s also a lot of BS involved, like mentioned test tasks. Just don’t bother and say it straight, don’t waste time.
You’ll probably will get bonus points for understanding those are impossible tasks to complete in short time.
Otherwise - no big deal, those companies want a free slave, move on.

Lets try again then. I have tried any platform and I always get the exact same reply.

Did you mean to paste all of that into here? I cannot see what that message has to do with this discussion at all?

Aside from that, I get your pain but ranting here is not going to change much. It does take a long time to find jobs in what are often niche fields.

What experience do you have? Do you have a degree from a university with a good grade? If not, that would be where to start.

If you do, do you have any further qualifications to make you stand out against everyone else with a degree?

Do you have a publically visible and high quality portfolio?

It can take months or years to find the right job, but it gets better if you have all of that.

I have a job with unity and have done for years now, but I also have a degree, a masters degree, and whenever I am applying I have an up to date and online portfolio.

So have you done all of that?

If so maybe you need to consider now is not the time given the world is in the middle of covid, to be putting so much pressure on yourself. FInd any job so you can pay the rent, and work on getting this job in the background. Even without covid you are entering a competetive market with high skill cieling.

My partner had a degree and masters but had to spend 3 years working in coffee shops and as a waitress and in a shop before she got a job in the 3D industry. It takes time sometimes, and its a trial-by-fire that everyone goes through. We both work in the industry now, but its not like we just applied for a few months and got the job, I have used unity since about 2010 and it took this long and all that work in 2 universities plus months of applying with a varied portfolio and a sony scholarship to get a job in the company I wanted. Its a competetive industry and it always has been. If games is hard for you to get your foot through the door, then try other industries using unity such as e-learning companies, companies that do visualisation and similar. Its easier to get unity jobs that are not games, than game based ones. I also personally find far more unity gigs that are not game-based but instead are more focused on AEC etc.

Some of the things you are saying are not healthy to your mental health and point to someone that is in a bad place, and sounds like you need to step back and try something else for a bit if it is causing you this much frustration.
Nothing should be more important than your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.

Your poll is also extremely skewed because of your little comments you have added below each option. Selling assets on the store is not unstable income, thats your take on it. For many it is very stable.

Same for fixed time frame contracts that you mention, why is the only option for that not enough to make a living on? I have lived on FTC for a while and the rates were fine.

Please post a link to your portfolio so we can tell you how you can improve it, that would be the first step to getting to the bottom of why you keep getting rejections.

Thank you for a detailed reply. I see many similarities between us. Foremost the time-span using Unity.
My mental state has gone bad, because lately I have felt not only rejections but also attacks, and the energy seems to be the same. The root/origin seems to be the same. Two years ago, everything was fine, I worked on a project, but then one graphic guy screwed us over, we lost the project and people started talking (read: damaging).
In the mean time My asset store projects get damaged, disputes were raised, rejections were made (the letter was pasted here, because the previous message got deleted by an admin and I did not like that, so I pasted the plain message, because it’s insane how some people simply sell assets out of other games, and once I create something entirely from scratch and I have permission to use free assets along the line, it gets rejected, an authentic product gets rejected.)

Now does this clarify, why my mental state, might be in this state?
Like why is this happening, why do I see “copy-pasted” messages, who is playing with me?

But you don’t have to worry about my mental state anymore. Thanks to all of this “feedback” I am all ready signing to a mental institude. I am just a single man trying to survive, but it feels as if I am fighting against groups of people. Don’t even know if those kind comments towards my racing physics were honest, or was it all just a irony and a hoax?
Because at the end, what people think about me now, is that I made games to attract children. Like literally, my advertisement ID is broken and I see vaginal yeasts and children’s clothing, while I watch videos of circuit racing and vehicle mechanics. The topics are not related at all and I get rejected everywhere online. Something is off

Might look offtopic, but in the meantime, Unity has sent me a LEGO game advertisement. I remind you I am 30 years of old, unity RARELY sends me emails, and now they do that. That’s just insane and has a lot of feminism in the air


As I was a child myself Lego was my favorite thing, women tend to stalk this kind of information

Ok, I tried to engage you in an adult discussion on the matter but you clearly are just here to rant and moan. If from what I said your takeaway is “I will go to a mental institution” along with everything else you said, plus your sexist and conspiracy-theorist comment on the lego microgame email (which we all get), I am done here.

Why pretend you are seeking info by asking questions when really you just want to moan? We have all had it hard at one point or another in this industry, but very few of us come here to write multi-page rants about it + push away any actual discourse on the matter. Take from that what you will.
