Hey guys first let me say I love the asset store as a programmer with little to no artistic ability it gives me the chance to easily find art optimized for game development and created especially with unity usage in mind.
However sometimes I’ll see this awesome asset the packs containing entire sets of impressive rigged and animated models. My question is for someone like me how legal would it to purchase these models and build agame or even brand around them?
It’s not something I am interested in but I am so curious why someone doesn’t take some of these asset packs and just build a convincing game around them or has some actually done that?
I know a guy who’s been making a few thousand dollars/month from two games created with less than $100 of assets on TurboSquid. That’s the money he’s using to fund his long term project and simultaneously swap out non-exclusive assets with exclusive assets in the two original games.
Unless you’re a company, worrying about exclusive rights and branding at the beginning is not very useful, compared to actually getting something out the door, just as long as the license lets you use the art in a commercial product.
It depends on your budget . Buying an asset beats ,
A) trying to make the models your self , I wasted a whole lot of time with this .
B) Paying 1000$ for a custom character if game dev is only a hobby , or you just don’t have the money to do it .
For me I have an artist friend who seems to be interested in helping me , but if she doesn’t get it done I have the asset store to buy enough for a generic looking game . If your just starting out , it doesn’t make any real sense to pay an artist thousands of dollars for custom work .
