So I'm working on a GDD right now...

This is my first time legitimately trying to design a game (I’m new here by the way, nice to meet all of you), and I’m quickly realizing how much of the design process I wasn’t mentally prepared for. So I thought I’d toss what ideas I have so-far onto this forum in case anybody would be interested in helping out or giving some feedback.

The game is called “Knightsbane,” and the best way I can probably describe the idea in a single sentence would be to say: It’s a 2D side-scrolling hybrid between the classic Castlevania games and Dark Souls with the addition of deep weapon customization and “semi-realistic” combat mechanics.

None of my design goals really reach to outgo those ambitions which I just mentioned. I’m being mindful to limit the design goals that I shoot for in order to actually maintain focus on all of them. I just really want to create an experience that captures the same magic that Castlevania brought, with games that almost entirely required raw skill in order to complete. As for the Souls series, well, I like those games for almost the same reasons I like Castlevania.

I won’t go into major detail here, because that’s what the document is for in the first place. You can take a look at my unfinished GDD here, tell me what you guys think of it so far (by the way, I’m using Chris Taylor’s example as a template):

Any feedback would be wonderful, I really just need some advice because this is my first time, but suggestions are more than welcome also.

Hi Virtus; I’ve had a good old read of your GDD - it’s a good start!

Design Documents are key but when just words they are very dry; most importantly unless the person reading the doc has an intrinsic understanding of the references you make (Castlevania, Dark Souls etc. - which by the way I love ) it can be difficult to understand your vision.

May I suggest you explore an online moodboard, something like http://www.moodshare.co, which will alllow you to collate reference imagery, YouTube clips of gameplay elements you would like to emulate and build upon, and anything else you think you need to capture and express the ‘feel’ of the game - these can then be easily printed to PDF and then shared.

Just a suggestion mind; but I think it will be a good thing to explore as you are just starting your journey as a Designer, more importantly being able to express your vision clearly to the team that will help you realise your masterpiece is key to it all.

It’s also nice for random browsers like me to nosey into what you are up to

Thank you so much for the input Mr. Awesome (and thanks for reading through my document), tomorrow I will definitely check this stuff out and continue work on the concept.

hey virtus welcome to the community and best of luck on creating your game i look forward too seeing more of it in the future.
