Is it possible to save a game made with Unity to say a memory card and play that game on an MP4?
SO far I see a lot of talk about IPhone, but if I really want to get my game ‘out there’ I need it to play on a machine that most people have. That would be your average PSP or MP4.
Most people, or the kids I’m trying to reach anyway, do not have IPhone. They are a minority.
Unity Games are native games and need to have a runtime for their platforms, at the time they exist for iPhone, soon too on the android.
the psp is unlikely because it has even less RAM than the original iphone at their hand, not considering other lacking things like the very slow cpu (222mhz, 333mhz in overclock mode, the original iphone had 400mhz and a vector cpu in addition)
I’m mentioning the ram first cause Unity needs 16mb already for itself due to engine and mono, with the 32mb a psp has, thats barely enough left to fit some textures and meshes in
aside of that, without a psp dev contract you couln’t license it and due to this far smaller userbase you potentially wouldn’t be interested to pay the per title 15k+ licenses for it (estimate basing on wii license)
All in all → no interesting platform.
Also there are much more iPod Touch in use purely for gaming than sony has even sold psps … (over 60M itouch 2nd and 3rd gen by now)
Very odd post, to be honest - do you mean an MP4 player? How could you possibly expect to play games that run on an iPhone\iPod touch (which, as Dreamora correctly states, is a pretty high end device) on something which has processing power not much more than a pocket calculator?
I think you need to read a lot more about hardware before you start trying to make games. You’re missing a lot of fundamental knowledge that you’ll need to understand as a background before you can even begin to understand the dynamics of game engines and the like…
I have no idea what the popularity of that thing is. But around here, nobody has anything like that. iPod touch is a much more reasonable market for kids, for now. PSP and DS make no sense for Unity, like dreamora said. Unity for the 3DS would possibly be a good idea, but even if that happens, the people who will be able to get their games on it will be very small.
Yes.I am talking about cheap game consoles.
Y’know the kind that the masses play with?
Thank you Jessy for knowing what I’m talking about.
dreamora, do you live in Jetsonland where MP4’s are already passe?
Well I don’t. I live in Borington Reality and in this place MP5’s are just starting to come out I have a plan to make my game accessible to the little cheap consoles that I see most boys in my region playing with.
Seriously, are you telling me that Unity3D is not applicable to the platforms that the masses play with? If so that is tragic! Unity3D must not miss out on an opportunity like this.
If I am small game developer planning to promote my games in a small region where most kids do not have PC or internet, but they do have small game consoles, how would I go about doing that?
Yes, I am technologically ignorant about a few basic things. I will study up on it so as not to annoy you all with apparently stupid or odd questions.
No, I do not want to make boring 2D flash games.
I was under the impression that Unity3D was for small game developers, presenting them with an opportunity to make nice 3D games that could be played on almost anything.
Well that my fantasy anyway. I will dream on, learning as I go…
However, I only know one person who doesn’t have an iDevice, because he’s an Android fanatic and thinks that Apple should burn in hell for all eternity.
I’d love to know where you live. Are you in the US? I’ve never seen anyone with these devices yet I see people with iDevices everywhere.

Where in the world do kids not have access to PC’s or the internet?
These things he’s talking about are east Asian products – I’d bet that some people in rural communities might still get their hands on them. Now that I see this, I doubt he’s even talking about the real PSP.
Yeah, there’s a chance we’ll see Unity on these things.
There may at least be something going on with Apple and video games in China, though. These things are not it. Maybe when they actually have WiFi built-in when it’s advertised on the box, at least?
That would be iDevices. iPod touches are included with iPhones, and together with iPads they have a quite large marketshare, and are currently by far the best opportunity for small developers to get their games “out there” (with a chance of actually being paid for and played by large numbers of people).
Nothing to do with Jetsonland, it’s just that nobody has those or has even heard of them, and they aren’t remotely suitable for Unity, which requires at least semi-modern 3D hardware. When talking about “the masses” you need to look at actual statistics, not what your next-door neighbor’s kid has.
Not to mention it’s not easy becoming a certified dev for Nintendo. And they have a LOT of TRCs you need to comply with. And you’d need a dev kit for testing etc (1000s dollars). Good luck. Same for PSP (but who uses those?!)
Not sure lion-gv
Technically it seems to offer a base to be considered but it does not seem to do any well at all and its 3G - edge based download is not exactly unity friendly unless the iphone c++ layer is ported over to be offered on such a platform too.
I see this as one of the few platforms where Torque “use wise” would crush Unity as filesize is the primary matter with edge / 3g connections.
Especially if they really are going to work with AT&T muahihi
